ORIGINAL POST

Dear all,

How much are drivers getting paid in Hong Kong these days? Do different ethnic groups get paid the same? I.e. do former gurkhas now drivers get paid the same as let's say a Filipino or even local Chinese driver?

Thank you.l

I have heard 10k plus per month for a Filipino. But that's just hearsay.

filipino drivers are hired under category of domestic helpers with license to drive, but they are not allowed to drive the employer to work.their stipulated salary is hkd 3480 + a few hundred dollars more coz they are driving you and your family around.they are like Friday man, will do all domestic work etc.Local drivers would be more expensive in region of hkd 10,000 - hkd 15,000 and they will just drive your car, not do any domestic work.

i believe amer's information is incorrect.

when looking to hire a domestic helper who has a driver's license, nationality has no bearing on salary or classification. (although i agree it might be difficult to get a local domestic helper with a driver's license for around $5000)

a driver, who is allowed to drive any family member to work (rather than just child related work, which is what limits the domestic helper who drives) is paid in the 10,000 pm region.

in both these cases, nationality is irrelevant.

Actually Amers information is a little more correct.

A driver on an FDH contract who has been given the permission from immigration to drive is entitled to a salary of $3580 / month. Some people may add a little extra but this is the government stipulated salary. They cannot drive you to work.

A local driver (meaning local or PR) or helper will probably charge by the hour for part time and full time can be as little as 10,000 up to around 25,000 if they are driving cross border.

Nationality is relevant as only certain nationalities are able to come into HK as FDH. For local drivers nationality is irrelevant.

Just to be clear you cannot just hire a DH and ask them to do the driving it is only under special circumstances immigration will grant permission for them to drive children to school or that but it is illegal to use the helper as a formal driver.

I have stated from my personal experience, not hearsay. You have to arrange/request immigration to give him permission to drive.in which case, he has to pass local driving test and get local license.in your application for DH, you have to mention that you need driving service as well.

DH will charge you a little more, for his driving service and local will charge you more than HKD 10,000-HKD 15,000.00 for services from 9.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m., for any extra hour, you have to pay him overtime...

All these rates are negotiable.

my apologies amer. i do know many drivers, and they are of many differing nationalities, which is what confused me in your original post.

we also have a domestic helper who has driving duties. i misunderstood what you wrote, and completely agree with your above post.
