I have a helper who is not such a great housekeeper (not a big deal, we get a pt to help), but is great with my kids and a good cook. She has gotten drunk on the job once but while someone else was a home with her and the kids. She has dipped into our booze twice while we were away on holiday. On a separate occassion, she was drunk when we came home from a holiday.
I believe she has been very honest with our valuables. She never put the kids in any danger. She's great with our pets.
Her salary is reasonable, but she's in debt to us and to loan agencies.
Would you hire such a person? Is it unreasonable to think I'll do better?

I wont renew her contract definitely. But I think it is quite rare to have an alcoholic filipino (is she?) helper because as far as I know, filipino women dont drink (or may be very occasional drinker). Drinking, debts... no way. No matter how good she is with your kids. She will give you trouble sooner or later.

The trouble with renewing her contract is that you're confirming with her that her behaviour is acceptable to you. Instead of seeing an improvement, you may see other worse things happening because she's secure in the fact that you still want her back despite all these undesirable factors. It's always a case of seeing how far they can push and how much they can get away with. I'd stay away from signing another contract. Start looking for a new helper.

I don't think drinking on the job is acceptable for any employer, let alone someone who is caring for your children. Plus, she STOLE from you by dipping into your booze while you were away. That alone tells me she's irresponsible and dishonest. Sounds like you and your family are pretty attached to her. I don't know if you want to invest time and money on her by getting her help or trying to help her yourself but it may be better to find someone more responsible. Good Luck!

I think driking at the job is unacceptable !
How can you trust her ? She may loose her sense of reality and do big mistakes with your children.
I wouldn't renew her for sure and would have fired her already !
Good luck ! You'll find someone else much better believe me

Hi Exeter. Friends in similar situation with the loan sharks who ended up knocking on the door at all hours with not so nice greetings looking for the helper who owed $$. Your address as the employer is on her contract and the contract is provided (copy of) to the loans people for proof of name and contactability. Yeah, your children were being looked after by someone else, but she shouldnt be drinking in front of little ones (if she was) and if something happened where your kids needed assistance (long shot, I know), she is not in the capacity to assist properly and judgement may be clouded. You certainly cant police this if you are out. Drinking to be drunk is one thing.....I think the worry re: sharks is driving her and not going to get better. DO NOT RE-EMPLOY. There are some darlings out there. Take advantage of one of them. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Ya, I won't be signing a new contract with her. It just kills me that she's had such a tough life, and she's shooting herself in the foot just when she finds a really good compassionate employer. Yes, but even I have my limits. Now I have to decide what kind of new helper I want...one with Western experience, one fresh off the boat, or one who has been here but working for local families. I really don't want to deal with "spoiled" helpers...we're not living in a palace with a package here.
Thanks again all.
