Dear friends,

Could you share your thoughts on the Dos and Dont's of having DH for the very first time? My DH is coming in a week, but I have no idea about setting out the instructions, etc. Should I buy a book to read? Any recommendations?

Many thanks!

Buy the book 'Helper's Helper'by Julie Jacobson. It's a good book to have for both employer and helper. Make sure you talk to your helper about work plans etc. My helper is coming in a week too and its our first time. She is really keen for me to write out work schedules for her etc, also she's keen to go on a couple of DH course's which I will arrange for her in April. GOOD LUCK

Don't give them too much at the beginning - start with the basics and reward for good work or a job well done.

Don't assume they know anything about housework or cooking or looking after your cookware, or iron or vacuum cleaner or anything, and when you ask them if they understand your instructions "Yes maam" does not necessarily mean they understand your instruction. Get them to demonstrate what you have just told them or to repeat to you what they understand you want them to do.

You may need to write a shedule of when you want things done - even a meal plan if you don't want the same meals every week. Have a list of groceries used or nearly empty otherwise on Sunday you will assume you have something when you don't - very annoying.

Set the ground rules with regard to phone calls and visitors and how long you expect them to have for lunch and start and finish times for the day - may change daily.
