I'm new to having a full time helper and wondered if it is necessary to keep a record of my helper's salary payment or should I give her a payment slip etc. Apart from the fact that its proof I paid her X amount, is there any other reasons to keep the record? Your advice or suggestion on what you do is welcomed.

We keep a very informal account. i.e. we just get our helper to sign for a specified amount each month and the date in a notebook.

We do a direct transfer from our bank account to hers, so we have a permanent history of all transactions. I asked if our helper wanted us to print off the transfer each month and she said no. But whenever she needs it, it's not a problem to just go into our bank online and get it off.
When we gave our helper a payrise, we put it in writing (with a probation period of 3 months) and had her sign it and tha she agrees to everything.
If you are not paying by electronic transfer, definitely get yourself a receipt book with carbon copy and when you pay her, make sure you sign and she signs for it. That way it protects both parties. Like any workplace, a record of any transactions should be recorded.
You can buy receipt books, etc. at Popular Bookshop. They have a huge stationery area and house all those sorts of things.

I don't know about the legalities, but I would strongly recommend keeping a record.
A receipt book works as neenib says, or do as we did. Type up a simple receipt in Word and print one with the appropriate date each month. Something like this:
"Receipt for salary received on xx xxx 2008.
Salary HKD ****
Food Allowance HKD ***
Total HKD ****
***name of helper***
"
When she gets her salary, she signs it and gives it to me. I keep the receipts for future reference. Just in case.

we do the same as cd. simple handwritten acknowledgement in a notebook. definitely better to keep a record! :)

i am always paid by electronic trf bank to bank. better i think as the bank would send me a monthly statement with the trf info on it. so its better and more tamper proof if you ask me.
but there was this one time that my employer paid me by cash. i was paid above the minimum wage after 2 months. all was in writing we even had a paper written that in the event that thye had to let me go they will follow the above minimum... forward tow months later, wifey decided i was too close with her kids (shes a single mom who like to party over the weekends) so she let me go. paid me minimum wage as my pay in lieu of written notice and no release letter and plane tix.. asked me to sign a blank reciept fr the wages and monies i supposedly recived she destroyed all our written records of the wage increase etc. it took a lot of courage on my part to stand up to her. she eventually agreed to pay me my dues.
so after that i prefer to be paid thru electronic trf's.. its not only for the employers protection but also for the helper. you can always get a copy of her bank statements from her..

Thanks for all your useful replies. Applebubble, i think that's a good idea on everyone's part. Only problem at moment, my DH does not have a bank account so will advise her to open one and in the meantime keep the paper records.

my boss used to write something like that of axptguy in a small notebook and have me sign it everytime I will receive my salary. She used to but now she don't. She just give me my salary that's it.
Its advisable though to keep a record.
