Some of the helpers were not working for expats... there are many instances of a family no longer being able to afford a helper so they are forced to let them go.
If you are interviewing a helper and she has been released due to financial reasons that is definitely not a black mark against her.

Mrs. Miggins - Can be an excuse or can be the truth. Hopefully you can speak frankly with the employer. BTW, I sent you a private message earlier; did you get it?

Actually I told a friend to use that as a reason to fire their maid. That way her feelings are not hurt.
Best to speak to the ex-employer and ask the right questions.. "would you hire her back".

If they have to pay for 2 boys to go to boarding school then theres every possibility that they have to cut back to pay for it. Boarding schools are not cheap, and without the children here theres less reason to have a helper so why not save the money and put it towards school fees. It is so annoying when people assume that as a gweilo you're living in the land of luxury. We really struggle to ba able to afford a helper. Other things have to go by the wayside instead.

As many of the above mentioned,I really think you should speak to the employer and ask if this is the real reason they no longer wish to employ their helper. The reason I say this is taking my own situation: At the moment I will be releasing my helper in mid contract because in a few weeks time, I will no longer be working and will basically be at home full time. Therefore I don't need my helper anymore. Now, when a helper finds new employment, they have to return to their home country before starting, but if the previous employer states that the helper was released due to "employers financial situation", the helper does not need to return to their home country if she finds other employment. I don't know if this is actually true or not but this is what I was told. I will confirm with immigration tomorrow but it's always best to check with previous employers first.

CD you are correct. Not every foreigner can afford a DH, but people usually figure that out prior to hiring one.
In the case of happychick, conditions have changed that no longer warrant a DH. The univ. prof and hubby, IMHO, did not want a maid anymore.. or did not like her performance.
