Is it better to hire a more experienced helper ( 10 yrs) vs. a 2-4 yr employee?

Any insight? Will the experienced workers be more set in their ways?

One that has more than 10 years experience is hard to find and also like Tiger01 says, their ways may not be acceptable to you. I should say that as long as they have the right kind of experience and the right kind of attitude, they're fine. As long as they're not terminated. Some of my friends even have the guts to hire maids that have no working experience abroad yet they have some of the best helpers that I've ever seen. They say that the magic lies in hiring helpers that would do whatever they want or instructed them to do. That they'll have no previous employer's ways to compare them to. And since they are their first employer, they'll be very grateful for hiring them even with their lack of experience. Somehow, they have proven their point as their maids have been staying with them for 5 years now and have loved their children as their own. Hope you, too can find a helper that'll be your best helper, ever. Good Luck!

you are better off to get someone with 2 to 4 yrs experience. if they have been in HK too long, they are set in their ways and know too many tricks and take advantage.

i had one who had worked in hk for 11 years. she was slow, waiting to retire, wouldn't do what was asked but on her day off, was out the door so quick you couldn't see the dust settle. also...the housekeeping money and housekeeping..another story in itself

I think perhaps you should also look at their age and their attitude.

I have lived in HK for many years and forgive me if I'm being a generalist, I have found that the 20 something old helpers generally are not that interested in their job. Admittedly, it's not the best job in the world and their working conditions vary from family to family, but even ones I know who have decent conditions are far more interested in going out on a Friday / Saturday night and Sunday to look for a boyfriend/husband, to take them away from this 'drudgery'.

Those who are older and more experienced may not have the same 'urge' to find a partner, and also, many have husbands / children back in the Philippines who they need to support.

So look at their experience, references, age, their family, what you want them for...and your own instinct.

The more experience one will know their work in and out, which is good. The bad side is that, they might not listen to you and some might talk back. they might tell you what to do too. mine former DH is alot older than me plus very experienced, she will talk back every time she disagree. You need to see their personalities when selecting DH. Good luck.
