Phone/Ferry for helper

We're hiring a DH from the Phils and were wondering if we're supposed to buy her a mobile and plan or if that would be her responsibility. We were also told that it was standard (by her contact here) to give a ferry card (we live in DB) for her to use on her day off to travel to and from central. This seems a bit off to me, but I'm happy to do it if it really is standard practise. Thanks for your comments.

it will be up to you to buy her the mobile or not cuz if she's a newcomer here then i think she will not think to buy the mobile for herself but you guys as her employer will need to stay in touch w/ her for her job performance w/ you right?so why don't you buy her the cheaps mobile and the lowest lowest monthly plan so that you guys can comunicate at anytime w/ your helper.she will need to pay her day off transportation fee but if you need her to travel around the City during her working day for your needs then you have to pay for all her transportation fee.that was all my answer to your question.hope it will help you. Thanks and Have a Good Day.

Agreed with sweetgirl79. You are under no obligation to buy a cell phone but it's a nice thing to do. Also it means you can get hold of her. I wouldn't buy a plan. I would buy a pre-paid card. That way she can top it up herself and you never have issues with excessive usage.

She should pay for transportation on her day off herself. But of course you can give this as a perk. It's a nice gesture and she will appreciate it.

I know this is an old thread, but I would like to comment anyway:

I noted that jmritcey said he/she live in DB which I take to mean Discovery Bay.

I have been there - its "green" and internal transport/buses are not cheap. I believe I paid 3.9 HKD to get from the ferry to my friend's apartment. I am not certain how much one would have to pay on the internal service to get to a PUBLIC service to go to anywhere else. On top of that, the special ferry service cost 27HKD ONE WAY from ifc to Disco Bay. That's 54HKD return. 4 days off, that's 216 HKD... which I believe would be a HUGE expense for most Domestic Helpers... unless you're paying her well above the minimum wage???

In this case, I'd say, I hope you provided her with a Ferry Card!

suggest that you don't give her a mobile fone outright, instead LOAN her one with a prepaid card. eventually, you could decide to let her to keep it if you deem her performance to your satisfaction.

if things don't work out - then you still keep the fone and LOAN it again to the next helper you get.

it will give her some motivation to work for something.

I agree about the ferry card as the transportation cost is really a bit much for most DH.

As for the cell phone - I would proceed with caution. If you give her a phone the advantage is that you'll always be able to ring her. The drawback is that she might always be making personal calls on it. Actually giving her a phone may reasonably be taken as encouraging that, or at least condoning it. If you really need to give her a phone (i.e. she's not planning to buy her own, or maintain her own, and you frequently need to call her or have her call you) then I would explain clearly and carefully the purpose of it and your expectations as to personal calls....

think of a cellphone as an office equipment. in the office, you don't give out free fones to your employees do you? yet you would not expect employees to provide their own fones for business use.

in the same way, loan a phone and explain that it is not for her personal calls but as a means for you two to communicate.
