Have any Americans had success with taking their amah home to the States for their (employers') vacation? Talking like a one to two week stay (for the amah, other parent will come later) where newborn baby care is needed. Thanks.

ok, thanks for the info. anyone have any scenarios where the dh didn't disappear? wondering how common this is. our dh has young kids back in her home asian country...wondering if that makes it more attractive to return to hk or to disappear in the states.

If she has relatives, or simply thinks that she can make a lot more money in the states then I don't think it would matter to her if she came back to hk where the amount of money she can earn is capped to her monthly contract - after all they are here doing this work only because they are desperate for money to make everyone's lives at home in the Phillipines better.
If you take into consideration the airfare and extra accomodations/meals/travel insurance/visa etc - would it maybe be viable to source a nanny/babysitter for the help you will need in the states through an agency there? Added to that the fact that you could arrange for her to take her holiday while you are away.

Good points, as always, Ness. Yes, if there's a tendency for dh's to take off when getting to the States/Canada, wherever, then best bet would be to hire local and get a family member to come with us on the plane (plane ride was a consideration in taking amah too...one way will only be one of us (parents) with the babe). But lots of college students at home for the holidays and if we need the help once there, should be easy to get someone recommended in the neighborhood.
As for amah holiday, need her here for pet care when we're both away. Then she can leave for holidays when we get back. Should be good timing for her...
It's a shame though, because we really like her, could use her with us, and I think it would be a good experience for her. Nonetheless, not worth the risk of being associated with this kind of "disappearing" activity; violates the visa issues in at least two different countries at once.

One of my friends experienced that too, they took her in UK for holiday, she needed her for her twins, after 3 days she dissappeared.my friends report this to the UK immigration in case she found an employer then they won't give her the chance to process her application..they really smart ass.better bring one of your relative..

Thanks for the input everyone. Best bet for us would be to have some of our neighborhood US kids (college/high school, etc) on hand should we need help. We'll know their families, etc., and their excitement will be more around the baby and some pocket money, rather then the 'travel to cool new place' aspect of this. As for the plane, we'll see! Have some family heading back from the Philippines right around the same time; may be they can make a pitstop in HK. : )
And ueber, I completely hear you, and I'm sure some amahs have gone on vacation with their employers and come back. Would still like to hear about those here.

I have the same question, except I am willing to give a guarantee that our DH will NOT stay back or disappear in the US.
For many reasons we are convinced she will not stay in the US but that ofcourse is our own humble opinion which the US immigration may not obviously accept.
My kids love my helper and Im not confortable hiring somebody new in the US even if it may end up being more expensive to take or DH along.....
Any suggestions????

the comment is completely uncalled for boricua. do you really think americans don't have helpers in america? think again. also, americans aren't the only ones posting about this kind of thing (i.e. helpers) here...so think yet again.
