as i know, a foreign domestic helper whose contract was terminated has to go back in her country of origin to wait for her new working visa.

Not the country of origin. She only has to leave HK. Macau is fine for example.

Many girls go over into the mainland as it is cheap to live.

But also Macau is the other place to go, IMD knows if the girl is in or out of HK based on her HKID card at the point of exit and entry. Expect it to take up to 3 months for processing, or if you are lucky 8 weeks and all of this includes the processing at Phill Cons. and HKIMD.

Our agency had it all done in 6 weeks.

Lucky you... I think it is a variable thing and six weeks is the shortest and 8 weeks the longest. Still, that is quite along time to find someplace cheap to stay until it is all said and done.

Technically she is responsible for her own housing since you do not employ her. Of course, you can come to some sort of arrangement.

I just tried to hire a DH this week whose contract was terminated. Immigration will not give her extension or allow her to stay in HK only under very certain circumstances as per Peggie Wong's email above. They are very strict about it, even an urgent case of requiring a DH is not acceptable so be prepared like myself to have to wait. They also told me she must return to her 'place of origin' so she can do medicals, training etc. They asked me to enclose a letter of urgency but they told me they have a lot of applications to get through so no guarantee of getting it any quicker - approx 8 weeks!
