Hi,
I have a 3 year old daughter and have been using a helper since my daughter became 2. At the first time, our helper was busy since my daughter was in school only in the morning, and I also had a job.
Now, I left my job and go to univ 3 times a week. My daughter also in school full day, so my helper is not really busy...
I thought I terminate her when our contract finishes, but I am not sure if I can do without helper.
With my helper, my huz does not need to buy lunch (he brings lunchbox which my helper makes), we do not need to use laundry service (my helper irons) etc.
Also, I am thinking of doing part time job after my univ finishes, so I think even if I terminate her, I would use part time cleaning services twice a week.
Considering this, using full time helper and part time helper not so different from the point of view.
I only want to make my helper busy a little bit more since she also wants to be more busy...
Anyone has suggestion or idea?

Well, if she does all the cleaning and the usual chores to your satisfaction and still you want her to be busy, before you leave the house you can pour a pile of salt and rice mixed together and ask her to separate it :p - Just joking.
seriously now. If she does everything and still have free time and you are fully satisfied with her work then I don't think you should think of ways to keep her busy. If she wants to stay busy then she can read books, surf the net, learn online languages and so on.
It doesn't have to be actual work to stay busy nce she is done with her chores.

I was going to suggest courses too and giving her official extra time off so she knows she can do her own thing. I worked as a live in Nanny and as the kids started school my workload in the day went down but i still felt like i had to look busy all the time despite being fully up to speed and having nothing to do.
Had i been told i could take a couple of hours off in the day would of made a huge difference especially to how i felt about my job and the people i worked for.

Do you have a balcony or terrace? You can get some plants, including spice plants. Gardening can take up a lot of time if you want it to.
Is she a good cook? Can she experiment with recipes?
If our helper "doesn't have anything to do" she'll garden or cook.

There is ALWAYS something to do in the household. My helper bakes, tries new recipes, clean up our closets, my kids toys are sorted and old clothes are put into a bin, then she asks me to sort them out to see which goes to charity which to give to my cousins..etc.
My helper also cleans the windows, balconies, counters, toaster, kettles... etc.
She also sorts and fixes all the DVDs, VCDs, CDs, magazines, novels... that get messed up during the month.
The list goes on and on.
However, if you don't examples like this, and your helper does all her work within the given time with extra time to "rest" on her hands.... she deserves it for being efficient, and getting her job done !

We even managed to grow basil plants from packaged fresh basil in the store. There's a project for ya. ;)

Hi axptguy...a bit off topic..but how did u do that..we had a basil plant which died and desperately wanted to grow another one..

- Get the packets with the latest expiry date.
- Cut off a couple of mm off the stems diagonally.
- Half fill a glass with water and put 2-3 stems in it.
- In HK, you can leave the glass outside in the full or partial sunlight. Make sure it always has water.
- Within 10-14 days, you should see white roots. Once these are a 1-2 cm long, replant in soil.
- Basil needs a lot of water.
No guarantees. And of course basil plants are available. ;)

I wanted to add that you should pick the flowers off basil plants or they will stop growing. You can also trim them rather aggressively when the stems start becoming wooden. They grow back after a while.
