DH help... live out?

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone know what the deal is with FDH's living out? I have heard its illegal but have heard a lot of helpers prefer it AND actually do live out? So, maybe there are ways to do it legally? We have a one bedroom place, and have two dogs so we are looking for a helper, but not to live in.. if allowed?

Thanks!

I know there are some people around here who have helpers who prefer to live out so they have the helper keep a few changes of clothes, a thoothbrush etc at the employers house 'just in case' the immi dept came around to ask questions but they live out all the same. If they ask where they sleep, they are to say 'on the couch'. Not exactly legal but they make it work!

Well thank you all for your replies.. I guess I will have to figure out a way or just not have a helper at this point! What about part time helpers? OR are those illegal too ???

You (and the helper) can get in a world of trouble if caught employing a part time helper. There are serious fines for employers and the helper will usually be jailed for a few months before being deported. Yes, loads of people do it but...

For peace of mind try one of the part time agencies on our site or post a free ad asking for a legal part time helper http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/helpers/parttime.asp

can anyone here relate personal experience or that of an acquaintance who was actually caught by IMMD using a live-out maid illegally?

YES. my former colleague was turned in by his former girlfriend after she found out he was married. informing immigration he had a live out helper was one of the ways she got her revenge.

I have a local part-time helper. My landlord helped me to find her. It is a bit tricky with the language barrier, but we find a way to manage. It took us about a month to get used to each other. She cooks and cleans for me. She has her own key and I never see her. If we need to communicate, we leave notes. My landlord told me that I also needed insurance for her - which I got quite easily. I am sure a local person could help you to find a local helper.
