Hi,

I would like my cousin to visit us and I would like to give his parents a break by getting a helper for a week or two if I could. He is completely disabled (cerebral palsy) and has to be picked up from the bed and into the wheelchair 3-4 times a day. He is almost 5'6", 16 years old. Anyone has clues on where to start looking?

Thanks.

There are very few helpers with that sort of experience - maybe contact the hospitals/medical centres about visiting nurses or home carers?

Good luck...

In Spore, a friend of mine did engage the help of hospital's nurses/aids during their off days to take care of her father who need similar care.

I remembered it was 2-3 nursing staff who shared the workload, rotating 12 hrs each. It was quite costly though.

There are helpers out there capable of looking after disabled people. I have a 16 year old totally dependant wheelchair bound son, and a full time male helper. Unfortunately most helpers work full time and would not be able to commit to 2 weeks. My helper can just about lift my son, but if you are looking at females you will need 2, unless you plan to stay in and help look after him. When would you be looking at? I could ask my helper if he knows anyone.

By the way if you are looking for a good day out for him, Disneyland is great, lots to see, and very wheelchair friendly. Priority seating on the shows, and the Buzz lightyear ride, and the river cruise both have a wheelchair access to the ride itself. The only lifting we had to do for my son the whole day was to change his nappy.

Thank you!

I will contact some medical centers to get a sense of costs, timing, etc.

cd, a male helper would suit him best specially on a temp basis. He also has a hip joint dislocation issue. At home, he has 2 female helpers- they have been around since he was a baby so they have grown to adjust their picking up techniques with his growth. I don't have a time frame when they would visit yet because I first wanted to find out if this was even a possibility. Traveling with him has become less of an option for his parents since he has become bigger and it is really tough on his father's back.

Now I will put this idea of visiting us with him in their mind. Disneyland is such a fantastic idea! He would absolutely love it. Would it be ok if I contacted you for more questions and details when their trip happens? Thank you!!

Just an idea, can you pay for one of the female helpers at home to come on the trip? It might be cheaper in the end and more reliable than trying to piece together local help?

(sorry, I know this might not be very practical, visa wise, etc...)
