How to find good help!

I'm getting discouraged! We've been looking for a helper for ages and I'm wondering if I'm going about it the wrong way.

I am a very clean and tidy person so of course I want someone who is good at cleaning. But now I think there is not many of the Philippino helpers who are like that!

Is it because my mum is also at home so she sees what they do? (eg. One helper who was trying out had our vaccum cleaner on top of our bed so she could vacuum.)

I don't want to hire a full-time helper if I have to end up cleaning after her.

I have been calling Asiaxpat helpers and then asking ones that I liked to come and try out for a day.

If I go through an Agency - can I still ask them for a one day try out?

Can I also hear from others about how you found your good helper?

Thanks.

If you want the best helpers I'd suggest you engage our agency - Evelyn 2815 2520 - she and her team see the hundreds who come through our office each month and they know which are the best

Why not try Indonesian helpers? They might be better suited for you. You can be of help to us too by posting your experience/s.

Attitude is key. Willingness to learn is more important than lots of know-how from the get-go.

As you say, many helpers aren't that good at cleaning. But that doesn't mean they can't BECOME good at cleaning. You can't expect them to be perfect from day one.

What makes a good helper a great helper is good management. Did you show the helpers how you want the place cleaned? Did you explain that you expected the place to be cleaned to these standards x times a week? Explain that this is a requirement for the job. Also explain that if she makes mistakes, that is all right, as long as tries her best and improves. Don't forget to praise her when she gets it right.

As mentioned, the key is finding someone who learns, not someone who is perfect from day one.

I think more detailed training is key if you want your home cleaned to a high standard and/or in a particular way.

I actually demonstrated all the tasks to my helper in the first week, and she took notes (I dictated all the important points as I was demonstrating!) which she can refer back to if she forgets.

There are 2 good books: "The Helpers Helper" which is obviously for your DH to read and also "How to Recruit, Train and Motivate Your Domestic Helper" which is for you to read & full of useful advice.

Hi, thanks for your replies!

As my mum is home all day with the helper, then she will always explain how to clean/cook etc, unless of course the helper is proficient. We had one helper who was so great but unfortunately she left to go back to the Philippines after 10 days. I'm always hoping to find someone like her again.

It seems if the DH is really experienced, then they can pick and choose their jobs - and I guess if I have a small baby, it means more work, so why would they want to work for us.

Thanks for your advice!

I'd take good attitude over experience any day. ;) Also, some helpers like working with small children.

I'm almost certain that one is out of print. However there may be another book on the same subject coming out in a few months.
