Anybody have a web/ip camera in their home? Do you use it to check on your helper/home when away?

"Respectful is a plus.. trusting and trustworthy are pluses magnified."
that's my relationship mantra ( or premise, if you may)... same mantra that I base on my work ethic.
So do we have them at my employers home? Yes. But we're never used to spy on us, helpers when the boss is away ( which could take 3 months at a time ) but for intruders thus they are on at night when no one is in the big house. Or during certain time of the day/s when no one could be in the house or within hearing distance. With the security alarm on, of course.

I think the web/IP camera is fine....I saw one at CSL its cool, it will be nice for once a while you can see your baby at home while you are at work, I was planning before to buy together with my hubby, but then I quit my job, so its no use anymore, I jsut turn on the webcam once in a while at home, then my hubby can see my son in the middle of the day when he is at work.
soufflequeen, the IP/webcam is different than what your boss have.

i think it is illegal (under the Privacy ordinance) to use any form of monitoring by camera on an employee, if they are not aware of it. There is only exception to this and it is where you hold an suspicion of misconduct or wrongdoing. So you need to be a bit careful on this one as an employer.

abby, I know what it is as I installed them myself. In fact, when I was still a volunteer that handle disputes/cases of FDH and/or their employers, there were 2 occassions where such device was advised for use-- with the knowledge of both parties and only in the living room and nursery when the children were home.

Does anyone know of a service provider that handles such installations? It would be nice to see my little one from work... only in the living room where he plays and in his bedroom.

you can just buy a web camera from any electronic store or the computer centre in wanchai and then you can hoom it up with any instant messaging (ie yahoo or hotmail).. thats as far as my tech knowledge goes (v.basic) but I am sure there are others who would know better set ups. Maybe ask at the computer centre or the tech forum on this website..

Most web cams are plug and play these days so very easy to set up. Skype do an interface for using a webcam you just need to turn the volume down if you don't want to be disturbed by noise.I use it all the time to chat with my mum in UK and you can enlarge the image to full screen if you wish.

soufflequeen, spy camera is different from webcam, thats what I am trying to say. And I am aware that spy camera is illegal, unless both parties agree about it.

Indeed our web cam is front and center for everyone to see. Anyone in our home knows it is there plus you can see (by the led display) when it is actively being used.

The privacy ordinance does not apply in the following situations:
"52. Domestic purposes
Personal data held by an individual and—
(a) concerned only with the management of his personal, family
or household affairs; or
(b) so held only for recreational purposes,
are exempt from the provisions of the data protection principles,
Parts IV and V and sections 36 and 38(b)."
It appears that you could record your DH without contravening the ordinance.

Make sure you let your DH know about the webcam and where you put it. I put mine in the corner of the living room, so I get a good view, and I use it merely so I can keep an eye on my little one, which helps break the monotony of work.
Without trying to get too technical here is what you need;
1. An IP camera. A webcam is no good unless you are going to leave your computer on all day. I use and recommend the Panasonic BL-C10, which is cheap, reliable and because Panasonic make it so easy to setup. You can get from Fortress, Broadway etc. The BL-C10 is an Ethernet model, which means you need both a LAN (network) cable and a power supply connected to it. Wireless models still need a power supply, are generally more expensive, and connect to the internet via a wireless router.
2. A broadband connection, with a web-router. This is the device you use to share your internet connection amongst multiple devices (sometimes wirelessly).
In the case of the BL-C10 you buy it, plug it into a power supply connect one of the LAN cable to the back of the camera and the other to the router. Register with the Panasonic Viewnetcam system, which basically serves to update the IP address of your Webcam to a static domain (http://xyz.viewnetcam.com, where xyz is up to you). Key in the information back to the camera through a web interface, and lo and behold, you will be able to access your camera through Internet Explorer from any PC.

Thanks! I'm gadget-challenged when it comes to stuff like that... but I will surely ask my hubby to look into it. Sounds easy enough for him.
