A friend of mince wanted her helper to travel with her family to Europe this summer. The helper explained that as she belonged to the Church of Christ, if she was to miss 3 Sundays meetings, she would be "on the wall of shame" and have her name turned down. My friend told her she would look for a church from the same group next to where they would stay but it's about 3 hours drive one way....
Has anybody had similar to that one?

Hard not to comment on a church that would do such a thing to a person but there you go. perhaps offer to go to church with the helper and speak to whoever is in charge and explain the situation and your helpers concerns. Any half decent person would understand that she is only missing church due to work commitments.

What kind of church is that? Sounds pretty weird (not to mention unchristian).

bottomline is if i were the helper i would think which is more important for me - work or my religion.
work is work in my opinion. if her church cant understand that, then isnt it time she woke up to some sense?
seems like a cult to me

I would suggest that if anyone that has a helper that goes to the Church of Christ that they find out about the (religion). I had a helper that went to that church and have met a few others that also attend. Wise to know what it's about is all I'm going to say.

Where is it? What's it all about?

from previous posts sounds like Church if Christ is more like a cult. i remember a post that said that this particular church demands quite hefty donations from the helpers - so quite often half or more of the money the DH earns goes to the church.

any church that uses 'shame' as a motivator to attend is not much of a church IMHO.

Funny typo, Fieter, do they 'pray' on the helper, or 'prey' on them? Heh heh!
Seriously, though, Eddy's friend would do the girl a favour if she introduced her to a church that values souls rather than appearances.

So exaggerated,why not ask their minister or pastor if its true,the point is your helper doesnt want to go.Is there any church that doesnt like there followers to travel,why are they here anyway?

I have searched the net re. that cult and it is one of their "requirements" that a follower is not allowed to travel to a place where there is no "church". it's classified in lots of western countries as a cult. The helper has to give at least 10% of her salary, no music allowed, etc... very strict. The helper would love to spend 2 months in Europe but is scared as she doesn't want to be banned when she returns. At this stage, no decision has been made.

ok now i see and have asked around.... that church is commonly known as Iglesia ni Kristo in the Philippines.
That church is popular alternative to the Catholic Church.
tsk. tsk. churches that use scare tactics are definitely a cult in my dictionary.
of course your helper does not want to be an outcast amongst her friends... they use a lot of peer pressure!
however work is work. and she should sort out her priorities.

it is what you call a tithe.
and as far as i was told - a tithe is a percentage of your salary that you "donate" or "contribute" to the church. and this is mandatory.
they are also known for publicly shaming their flock for non payment of tithes. i.e. they would announce to the congregation persons who has not given the required tithes. ... or so I was told.

Part of every member's income goes to tithes. Dancing is prohibited, along with eating animal blood.

well i gave you the link - read it... it says "Part of every member's income goes to tithes. Dancing is prohibited, along with eating animal blood."
"Theologically, the Iglesia ni Cristo is a cult of Christianity due to its rejection of core doctrines of the Christian faith
The tighly controlled movement is known for its aberrant and/or heretical doctrines"

Wikipedia - The Iglesia ni Cristo[9] (pronounced [ɪˈgleʃɐ ni ˈkɾisto]; Tagalog for Church of Christ; also known as INC, or Iglesia[10], is the largest entirely indigenous Christian[11] religious organization that originated from the Philippines[12
====
By some accounts, it is now the second largest formal religion in the Philippines, a former Spanish and US colony, after Catholicism.
Discipline and conservatism define the sect. Attendance is compulsory at twice-weekly masses inside its distinctive and brightly lit spire-topped churches, where the women sit apart from the men.

he Philippines is the only dominantly Catholic nation in the Far East, with eighty-four percent of its population belonging to the Church. Since this is its largest potential source of converts, Iglesia relies on anti-Catholic scare tactics as support for its own doctrines, which cannot withstand biblical scrutiny. The Iglesia tries to convince people of its doctrines not by proving they are right, but by attempting to prove the Catholic Church's teachings are wrong.

Mayette you should also read the poster's post which reads
The helper has to give at least 10% of her salary, no music allowed, etc... very strict.
=====
that 10 percent mandatory amount is called a tithe

JIL[Jesus is lord church] gives tithes maybe thats the church your looking for'why not go to the CHURCH OF CHRIST then observe so you guys know whats goin on inside.that church.,As for the helper then release her than giving false remarks to her faith maybe some employer out there will understand and respect the helper's faith. In the name of respect I dont think the helper is minding her employer's faith.
