I posted a thread in December about my helper having ovarian cancer. Finally she got removed her 15 cm ovarian tumor and another smaller one at Queen mary in February.
After they analysed the tumor cells, they told her she needs to get Chemio, twice a month during 6 months. So far I have no information about the spead of the cancer because herself even does not know, the doctors are not very talkatives.
She has been of course on sick leave since the diagnose, since then, i still paid the sick leave days and all hospital fees.
Her contract ends end of april, she is insisting for a renewal so she can get the therapy in HK. I have already hired another helper, she just got the visa approved and arrives next week.
After thinking with my husband, and the liability we have on the helper , we decided not to renew her contract, although we still want to help,
we can't go so far and take all responsability again.
I feel helpless towards her, she and her friends are trying to persue me all the time but my decision is taken alredy. I do want to help her and try to find some assistance to get treatment back in the philippines. I have asked around but everyone is telling me that the chemio the philippines is very expensive but noone can give me a cost, then i would like to find some philippino assiociation where she can call and seek helps and advises, but also i can't find any.
Does anyone know any help center or philippino association that can help her ??
I can't renew her but I am trying to find some other alternatives.

i feel for the helper's situation
however what i don't feel is her abusing your generosity. she wants you to continue her contract so she can get free medical care and i do not think that is fair to the employer.
an employment contract was signed so she could perform a duty, a duty that she is not able to perform because of her ailment. and yet she expects to be hired so her medical bills can be paid by her employer.
looking at it from the real world, i do not think any corporation will hire me as a front to pay for my medical bills.

It does sound like you are both in a very unfortunate situation. You are not liable for her treatment after the contract, however you seem like a decent person and want to and should do something to help. However, at the end of the day you are employing someone to help your family and also at the end of the day, she is not your family nor your responsibility. One thing that gets me about the ladies we employ - what do they do with the money they earn? Surely they have saved some of it for a rainy day or have invested it. It shouldn't be the case that if you don't pay for the treatment - she cannot get it. I think I would have to stand my ground and say that you are not renewing her contract, however you are willing to give her X amount contribution toward her chemo and treatment back in the FP's. If she doesn't use it for that then that ultimately is not your problem. I nearly hired someone recently but then found out she had lied to me and had a bad reference. I retracted the offer and I got all kinds of abuse about her sick family and kids at school and how it was all my fault that she was going to be in deep trouble financially. I felt really bad, but then at the end of the day I have to put my own family first.
Can you get a quote re how much the 6 months of Chemo will cost in the FP's and contribute toward this. If she has been a helper for a while then it is also her and her family's responsibility to pay for her chemo with the rewards they have seen from her hard work and sacrifice.

I heard it's about P45,000.00 or HK$7,500 per cycle excluding the meds. (This figure needs to be verified)
Edit: It's even higher now, it's 50,000 php per cycle/session.

If she goes back to Philippines and can prove that she can't afford to pay for her Chemo she can get help from the PCSO (Philippines Charity Sweepstake Office)

i feel sorry for your maid - you have done your best for her.
they have some sort of public system and surely they can help. our previous helper's daughter was hospitalised and told me that there is a public health/hospital service, but she herself preferred to go private.

I went to their social security office next to the consulate already and they are supposed to pay a monthly or yearly fee to get some help but she only paid 2 months so she is not entitled to it..
Arlina : yes my worse ennemy is conscience and it kills me, but i can't take that much risk because she is not my family. My income is much lower since the crisis started and financially i can't support her.
I hope in the Philippines they will do something for her.

Hi Marrianne, I think you've done your part already. You've done your best and the rest is up to your helper's destiny. I've stayed in Philippines and as alexismith posted above, your helper can go to charity institutions such as PSO.
Stop beating yourself up, think that you've done what's best for everybody.
