I had two interviews arranged for this afternoon but the helpers did not show up. I can't believe they did not even call to say they couldn't make it. Is this normal?

Yes.
I always SMS the helper before the interview to confirm time and address. This helps to 'remind' them to tell me they are not coming!
Also, I do a phone interview before arranging the in person interview, this saves time too.

I think about 20% of the helpers that I was supposed to interview failed to turn up, despite phone interviews and texts.
I have even called after half an hours to see whether one was lost etc., went to collect her by car from the place she claimed to be and there was no sign of her. Called her again and when she eventually answered her phone, she admitted that she'd accepted another job.
Another was 3 hours late and had not answered her phone or replied to texts. When she eventually arrived, we had given up on her and were getting into the car to meet friends for a late lunch. She was terribly miffed, snapping 'I could have come all this way and you would not even have waited for me!'. I'm not sure that her concept of the value of time was quite the same as ours.
The worst one was 'only' an hour late and having given a glowing impression over the phone, showed us her file of 'reference'. Unfortunately for her, she had forgotten to filter out her larger section of written warnings - all for major things.
Hoping that we don't have to go through interviews again any time soon. Good luck with the rest of your abiagil10!
