Does anyone out there have a local nanny?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone out there has a local nanny and if so, can you let me know how you found them? Also, do they work extra hours if you need to go out at night and how much do they get paid?

We have four kids and are keen for them to learn to speak Mandarin while we're here (probably for 7 years). I'm going to have a FDH helper as well who I guess we'd get to do cooking and cleaning - yes, I know this could make for interesting politics! But I'm really keen for the kids to get spoken to in Mandarin all the time so they can pick it up without us needing to force them off to lessons.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

There are agencies who find local nannies for you but bear in mind these are quite expensive (approx $20,000/month) and very, very rare to find one who can speak Mandarin, most are local Cantonese speakers.

You may be able to find a part time helper who charges $60 - $100 and hour but again you are going to struggle for Mandarin speakers.

Depends where you live, probably - if you're in the NT there should be no shortage of Man. spkrs looking for work, but depends on if you're looking for a qualified person or not.

Hi,

We definitely want someone who is experienced with kids. We live on the island though happy to have someone live in.
