If there is a book about domestic helper, what would you expect from the book? What kind of information would be most interesting to you?

For practical issues around the house etc, exactly what is in the book entitled "The Helper's Helper" (or something close to that). And for the up-to-date legal information (because a book can quickly become outdated) you can't beat the information available on the Immigration & Labour Departments' websites.g

Do you mean a book about domestic helpers (ie their experience working abroad)?
Or a book to give to your domestic helper to help train her or have her work better (like a training manual written for them - what utensils to use, basic kitchen hygiene, basic recipes, how to do domestic tasks)?
Or a book on how to manage your domestic helper (smple schedules, clear and concise intstructions, suggestions for house rules)?

TC, takiing "The Helper's Helper" as an example, is there anything else that you think can be added to "the helper's helper"?

Hi CSI, I am thinking about a book that could give the employer of DH a good guideline re how to train the helper and have her work better.

Can't think of anything in particular. We haven't actually hired a helper here in HK (When we came to HK in 2002 we vowed we'd do whatever we could to get by without a helper. Five years & one baby later we've succeeded so far. In fact we'll be leaving soon so I think we can say we made it. At times there have certainly been times when it would have been nice to pay someone else to do things around the apartment, but the pluses of not having one far outweighed those times in our opinion.) so have no experience here, but have in other places (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Fiji) and that book has been handy wherever.

The book I prefer to "Helper's Helper" is called "Recruit, Train and Motivate Domestic Helpers" (ISBN 988-98462-1-7 published by Corporate Wellness Concept Limited) written by Bonnie Pun da Rosa.
Tha author was born in HK, educated in the US,lived most of her adult life in Sng and wrote the book while resident in HK.
My copy was given to me by a friend so I do not know whether it is still available or when it was published (page is ripped out). If you can locate a copy, however, it is a detailed guide for finding the right person for your household and training that person to work effectively. There are numerous checklists and tips which are set out in a practical and logical manner. There is also an appendix which lists the reults of an interesting survey on HK DHs (eg 13.6% wanted to be paid fairly for doing extra work eg working on public holidays, 0% wanted to be taken out more often, 12.5% wished that their employers did not keep them working until late at night). I found it an invaluable aid for working out what were fair employment conditions and expectations.

Perhaps a chapter on adapting to having an employee in the family home. Some folks are not raised with servants and can feel a bit uncomfortable about having, what is, a stranger in the home. Also where to draw the line between treating the employee as an employee or as family member so that familiarity does not breed contempt.
