are the working hours fixed by law? Can we ask the helper to work 12 hours with 1 hour lunch break?

What i can find in the internet is just related to the rest day but not related to the working day.

The working hours are not fixed by law. However since you may by law not abuse your helper the working hours need to be "reasonable" and not abusive.

12 hours a day with a 1 hour lunch break is not unreasonable per se. Many helpers work more than that (heck, many office workers work more than that). However in my opinion it does depend on how hard the work is. Ask yourself if you could work those hours under those conditions.

Given the nature of helper work, many work perhaps 11-12 hours but have a few "soft" hours in the middle while the kids are at school. As I said, figure out how hard the work is. Taking care of two toddlers and a baby all day long is much tougher than having the same hours and older kids at school.

Many helpers are willing to work long and hard hours. If you feel she is working very hard, you should consider increasing her salary. Money goes a long way as a motivator, for helpers and for anyone else.

Unfortunately for the helpers, you can do whatever you like.

Most of them end up working a 12 hour day - some even more... but the idea is that because they are living with you, they are not working constantly for those 12 hours.

You can set their working hours however you like. Just as long as you are reasonable and not expecting to work them hard continually!

Just want to add that the only thing set down in the law is their days off - one day a week, and most of the public holidays and their annual leave...
