Hi everyone,
I have emailed the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department about this but they seem to be very slow in following up.
There are a lot of big rats living on my street. When I come home at night I often see 10+ rats that are about 20 - 25 cm long (not including the tail) swarming around and I have to walk through them to get to the entrance to my building.
I have been downstairs a few times on sleepless nights with my CO2 BB gun which I have to admit was very entertaining and does wonders for stress relief, but they are really starting to get on my nerves now. Today when I got home, there was one on the stairs I need to go up to get to the lift, one of those tight steep stairwells. The bugger scared the sh!t out of me - he was at the top of the stairs and I was down the bottom, there was a brief moment of eye contact that said "we can never be friends" before the ensuing conflict where he charged straight at me and went head first into my leg at about 50km/h before scurrying off, probably with a headache. He was seriously big too, looked about the size of a small cat.
One good point of course is that if there is ever a major food shortage, or a zombie outbreak in HK, I wont have to go far to get my supply of protein - but then there are also plenty of noisy neighbors for that.
Longer term I will move out of this place, but I still have 6 months on my contract. I'm sure I could break the contract etc but I would rather not if I don't have to, especially since I have a big wardrobe from IKEA that I do not, ever, want to build again.
So as far as I can tell, I have 2 options.
1. wait for the hygiene dept. to do something, or
2. get hold of some rat bait/poison and bring on rat Armageddon.
I would really like some other opinions on this, is there another way to deal with the problem that I haven't thought of? And where in HK can you by rat poison?
Thanks for reading!
Edit: I just realised this went into the DH section, but I can't move it. sorry.

Ask your building management, they will normally know of a local company they use to treat Rat infestation, meanwhile, have a look where the rats may be getting in your place, around in-coming pipes etc, if there are any holes, then get a bag of filler and fill them.
Keep any food like braekfast cerials, pet food, crackers, biscuits etc in an airtight container.
My neighbour had a problem with rats, she just fiiled in the holes, and has not had aproblem since.

I bought my bb gun in mong kok, you can get the rifles with lead pellets there, my rifle is actually rifled in the barrel, this thing shatters beer bottles with one shot.
