Food Allowance - How Much?

ORIGINAL POST

I employ 2 domestic helpers (live-in) and pay one of them $4000 per month and the other $4500 per month. They do not tend to eat the same food as us but buy their own food from money I leave as a household fund for groceries etc. In order to budget better I would prefer to allocate them a specific sum as a food allowance but don't know how much is apprpriate. Any suggestions from others who pay a food allowance?

By law the minimum food allowance (if you do not provide food) for DH is HKD300 a month. You can pay more if you wish to. There have been many discussion in this Forum on how much is appropriate, some say $500 some say $800. There is also a post from 'chefcrsh' in this thread: http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/domestichelpers/threads/90335.asp which shows a perfectly healthy list of food for a month for just under $300.

Someone paying their helper more than the minimum wage is likely also to pay them more than the minimum food allowance of HK$300 per month. HK$500 sounds about right for your situation, but it is easier if they just eat with you and don't get an allowance.
