BEWARE OF DISHONEST HELPERS

I recently fired my helper for lying, laziness and debt problems, after giving her numerous chances. How surprised I was then to see her photo and name on the list of helpers advertising their services on Asia Expat as an honest and hardworking helper, even the information she included was untruthful. Anyone who chooses to employ a helper without a previous employer's reference, needs to be careful as you dont know what kind of helper you are getting.

Mrs. Miggins, one can only assume then, that the employer was not happy with her, although if I was asked about my ex helper, I would certainly give my opinion as I would not want anyone to go through what we did. I am now about to embark on lots of interviewing. Any tips?

Hollyparton, I can only advise you to go for a younger DH that hasn't been in HK for too many years. Usually the ones that have like 10-15 years of experience in HK are very arrogant and they want to be the boss in the house. I found that younger girls with less experience are much more flexible and listen to your requests better.

Good luck

to ladyfrog,

that is great advice.

the ones who have been here the longest think they "know it all".

many are resentful if you tell them how you would like things done.

also, don't just interview the "last" employer. some expats are only here for 1 year or less.

interview other employers as well.

if the helper tells you she no longer has their address because they have "gone away for good" they probably have something to hide.

most people are now using email.

the more checking you do - the more likely you are going to get someone who suits your needs

I would also add one more thing : do a trial day before deciding. If you like a DH, just ask her to come for a trial day (that you pay), so you can see if she's how you're expecting.

Ladyfrog, after employing a 'know it all' helper the first time, I then employed someone too young, with no experience, the next time, thinking that I could mould her to what I wanted but even with repeated instructions and demonstrations, she was still incapable of running a house. Worse still she neglected my son and dogs! She was just here for a good time. The trial day sounds a good idea - thanks.

To hire her for a day is not legal. But just like a typist coming for an interview, you will ask her to type to check her speed and accuracy. Ask her to show her skills as a domestic helper when she comes for an interview, to me, is quite acceptable. Give her 'some money' at the end as the travelling fare sounds good to me too.
