Domestic helpers and TV

I'd like to know what other people think about this one. My DH has been working for us for 2 months: she's pretty smart and fairly hardworking but we don't know each other that well yet.

We don't have cable TV in our current place but are moving in a month to a new place where we will be able to receive cable TV. She's told us in casual conversation that she's looking forward to having cable TV as there are programmes she used to watch in her old employer's home that she has not been able to follow in our place. I was only planning to get cable TV in the living room and our bedroom but I have the feeling she'd like to have cable in the kitchen (there's a tv point there, but only for terrestrial channels). I don't mind buying a tv for her to watch in the kitchen, but am less keen on installing cable tv especially for her there (is there an extra charge for more cable TV points?).

Firstly, I'm a bit worried she'll spend too much time catching up on her favourite programmes, but I guess I have to trust her on that one. Secondly, for personal reasons, we'd rather not have our baby become too used to TV being on and would hope she respects that. Thirdly, if we don't get her cable in the kitchen, I'm wondering whether she'd just go into our bedroom to watch it while we're at work. The TV in the living room will be a projector, which she does not know how to operate, and we'd rather not have her in our bedroom watching TV at the expense of looking after our child/doing other chores. What rules do people have about watching TV and and do you think I should install a cable point in the kitchen? I'm worried about disappointing her but my husband thinks I'm too soft! Thanks for your thoughts.

I would let her have it (in her room if possible) but tell her that it's on a trial basis and if you have any reason to believe she has it on when she should be working that it will be removed without further discussion. That way she is not being punished for something she may or may not do but she knows how you feel about it and the consequences if she abuses your trust.

We've given a tv to our helper...but no cable and she was grateful for just that.

You are the employer and you need to set boundaries that you are comfortable with.

we have put a tv in the helper's room and a dvd player. She wanted to get the dish for the Phil chanels (apparently you can get one for $1,500) so we gave her money to do that as well - which she never did - so guess, she did not really want it that much. Most of the time they watch dvds (borrowed from us or other helpers). No cable I am afraid apart from the living room.

Thanks all for the views. Apparently the kitchen is the best place to install the cable for some technical reason...but thinking about it, I think the reason I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable is because my DH seems to expect me to install cable there as she keeps asking about it. My previous helper may have had her faults, but she didn't give me this feeling (hard to describe it better). Also, I have problems saying no to anyone!....but cost is a factor and I have to find this out.

Taylor - will you ever watch TV in the kitchen yourself? does it mean that you can only have cable in the kitchen? if so, it appears you will be installing it only for your helper - I can imagine you sitting and watching it in the kitchen I guess? If it is for your helper only, guess you have to consider whether you are prepared to pay for it? I try to make the helpers as comfortably as it is humanly possible in those broom cupboards they have to live it (and I did give her money for the dish as I mentioned) but even I might have a bit of an issue paying for cable for her I am afraid... tough one... why dont you say - "we never installed it for our helpers before" and see what she says!

Sorry for not being clear: we can install cable in the kitchen and the living room, but not in the maid's room (because it is further away, behind the kitchen and there's something in the way-sorry didn't pay attention when this was explained to me). And the street where we're now living does not have a cable line, so all this is new to me!

Hi we installed broadband for our helper which came with some free channels. However my helper hinted that she liked star world this however would be at an extra cost. So i decided to get a years subscription and gave it to her as a birthday present. Maybe you could ask her to choose one channel and give it to her for christmas.

You can gave her TFC as what sharmane suggested, either GMA7 or ABS-CBN as a present. Let her choice. These two filipino channels is the most popular in Phil and they have prime time program that they may be addicted to watch. Like the noon time show and the soft opera at night. There must be consideration of the time. You need to set a time for watching tv.

Wow, I think all of you treat your helpers really well. I'm just wondering...between domestic chores, taking care of kids, cooking..where would she find time to watch TV. I'd rather her sleep earlier & be energetic in the mornings...otherwise they tend to stay up late catching up on their shows.

The same way mums do, parents don't spend every waking hour cleaning or running around after kids. Surely your not saying these women should work and sleep only and have no time for TV or reading etc ???

How boring do you want her life to be? I'm happy for my helper to relax over a few tv shows after working all day looking after my monsters.
