Unsure-first time employing helper

If a helpers day off falls on a public holiday do I give the helper another day off in lieu?? Basically two days in total.

Also the levy that we pay up front for the helper is that taken out of their monthly salary? I understood it to be $400.00 a month. Is this correct and also does any one waive it if the helper has done a great job during the month. I had a link to a page on that explained the helpers contract but cannot locate it now.

Thanks in advance for your help.

She has only been working for 1 week and so far she is absolutely fantastic. Hope it stays that way. I agree with you and as I was waiting for a reply I eventually found the link on the government site that explained about the public holiday and rest day issue.

I believe that additionally you do not have to allow them to take the public holidays (12 in total) until they have been working for you for 3 months. I would never do that myself but that is apparently how it can be. You should have already paid the domestic helper levy when you submitted all the paperwork for your helpers visa/contract etc. You are able to pay for the full two years, or in 4 six monthly installments (no interest penalty). If you decide to go the six monthly installment option take heed that they do not send you an invoice to remind you to pay, so write the installment dated down in your dairy, otherwise you will receive a reminder notice that it is past due. (Ditt for your car registration). I don't know of any option to pay it monthly. It was brought in to raise funds to retrain local workers without jobs because of the high unemployment rate. If the statutory holiday is a day when you for some reason would really appreciate your helper working then you can give another day instead. We discuss this with our helper and for instance she hates taking all the days over Chinese new Year because she has been here so many years and finds it boring and freezing cold to sit around during that time, she works and we either pay here extra (think of it as a bonus as paying for working extra days is illegal) or she has had extra days off when family where visiting HK and she wanted to go out and about with them. As in all cases I think it needs to be well discussed and documented ahead of time.

Ladyfrog- I have just hired a helper who has come from a chinese family and so far she is amazing. Very hard working and very polite. Adores my children as I have three of the little treasures ( I am saying this with gritted teeth at the moment, my 4 y o is playing up) She has only been working for about 10 days and its been a dream. I am no expert but My hubby and I did our homework with how to treat the helper. When she arrived the first night we all sat down and went through what was required of her. My hubby did up a list of the tasks that she was to complete and also went through her manner in which she spoke to us and the children. It was great because she knew up front that we would not tolerate any bad behavour and we would treat her very well (compared to the chinese) if she followed all the guidelines set out. We also gave her a copy of our expectations so she was clear on all of them. My hubby also asked her if she was happy with all of the expectations. You probably have a lot more experience than I do but after speaking to a lot of people they all say the same. To start off be firm. Sorry If I have stuck my nose in but I thought if I could help you in any way then great.

Take it easy and pleased your situation has resolved itself.

Gabercro, thanks for this. It's a good idea to prepare a guidelines booklet. I think I'll do the same :-) I hope she'll be as good as yours !

Hi Gabercro!

I'm so glad you've found a wonderful helper at last. Many of my friends have great helpers, but you are right that it is important to set the rules right away. We didn't do that for our helper we hired this winter, and it's been disastrous. In fact, I wanted to ask Ladyfrog a question regarding termination if you don't mind...

Ladyfrog: Did you ask your helper to move out right away? I'm really worried because our helper has tons of stuff and she is not trustworthy enough to leave alone in our home after she has been terminated. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

Gabercro, thanks SO MUCH :-) It's really very kind of you.

Amyvalentine, we've asked our helper to leave on Saturday. We'll do the termination papers on this date as well. So it gives her 2 days to pack. I think it's more than fair.

I'm not too worry about her stealing... I've put all the precious things away already.
