Hi,
This is my first attempt to hire a Philippina domestic helper from overseas. Everything went well until the last minute... She said she can't borrow enough money to come and work for us in HK. Does anyone know the rough amount they will need to borrow in order to come to HK? from who (banks? finance companies? employment agent...)and duration for repayment?
The poor woman got the job but can't take it up and I am back to the square one... Life is a irony.

I found this helper through an agent in HK. We got visa and everything done. Just before booking her ticket to come to HK. She disappeared from the agent's radar for a few days. Once the agent found her, she said she can't pay the fee in order to come and work for me.
I'm just wondering how much this fee would be. As for me, I am back to the square one.... stuck with this agent ( I already paid the agent's fee...as far as I can tell, suitable candidates are few on their book.)Not to mention, another two-month wait at the immigration should I find the new replacement. Maybe it's easier to hire DH already in HK.

Pinkstone,
PhP 100k is robbery. I know this is the going rate, and quite a number of domestic helpers fall victim to these agencies. The fees an agency is supposed to legally collect is not more than PhP30k.

It is easier to get a new helper who is already in HK. For one thing you can actually get to meet them first before committing yourself. there are always people becoming available, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get people lined up for interviews. Of course, whether (a) they actually turn up for the interview, and (b) are suitable is another matter.

mochi,
I have heard through several friends that some agencies in the Philippines will also ask the helper to take more medical tests from the agencie´s appointed doctor as a way to get more funds from them. As if they have the extra funds to spare too. Are you still looking for a helper?

Thanks everyone for your kind advices. I knew FDH needs to pay in order to come to HK but was suprised with the amount the agent asked.
I am stuck with this agent as I paid them a fee for finding the helper in the first place. So I need to pick one from their database to replace the one that did not come.
I will also look around in HK to see if there're any suitable ones. Maybe the agent can swap for a local hire.
Mati, if you have any recommendation, please send me an e-mail. Thanks very much.
