When COVID-19 pushed the world into lockdown, Hong Kong seemed to remain relatively undisturbed. While the city-state has been used as an example of how to handle the coronavirus pandemic, fears surrounding the surge of infections are growing. How the COVID-19 test works
There are three kinds of tests available in Hong Kong, including a DNA/PCR test, blood test, and a finger-prick blood test.
The DNA/PCR test uses an NSP swab to collect lower respiratory tract specimens. This recommended test is highly-reliable and offers results in a few days. Even though DNA/PCR tests are more accurate, standard blood tests also show previous infections. Blood test results tend to lower during the first two weeks of symptoms and can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. The finger-prick blood test is an at-home version that shows results within 15 minutes, but requires additional testing due to its questionable accuracy levels.
Who should get tested for COVID-19?
Whether a person should get tested for COVID-19 depends on three factors: symptoms, close contact with a confirmed case, and travel from high-risk zones. Any person showing major COVID-19 symptoms such as fever and dry cough is strongly encouraged to get tested, while milder symptoms should be carefully monitored. Those who have been in close contact are also at higher risk and should get tested ASAP. Lastly, all passengers flying from high-risk areas must show their COVID-19-free health certificate before boarding.
Where to do COVID-19 tests in Hong Kong
Both public and private
hospitals in Hong Kong offer COVID-19 testing. COVID-19 tests in a public hospital start with an HKD $180 consultation. If you’re deemed eligible, then you’ll get a free DNA/PCR test.
Private facilities also provide COVID-19 tests, though you’ll have to pay for the consultation and the test itself. You can expect to pay anywhere from HKD $2,000 to HKD $4,000, so it’s advisable to shop around before committing to one. Another option is to order a DIY testing kit from a reputable company. However, you’ll have to prove your eligibility to be able to order.
Do private health insurance plans cover COVID-19 tests?
Private health insurance plans generally cover pandemics, though you’ll have to check your individual policy to be sure. Policyholders with outpatient coverage who have had a medical practitioner agree testing is medically necessary will likely be allowed to make claims from their insurance provider.
Finally, if your COVID-19 test results come back positive, you’ll go to a hospital for treatment and quarantine.
