ORIGINAL POST

My niece is here visiting for a month and needs to use her iphone bought in USA. People told me it can be UNLOCKED for a fee at some phone stores. She lives on Kln West, but also wants to know about on HK side where she is more familiar with.

Pls advise :

1/ Shops : Kln, HK that you all have used that can do this.

2/ How much should I expect to pay.

There is a good shop at the corner of O'Brien Road and Johnston Road, by the Wan Chai MTR. I don't know the price but I would guess around 500-800.

Tnx for the "grid ref". Will ask. I never imagine that it would cost that much to unlock.

True, MarathonHK, but a lot of people feel uncomfortable doing it themselves.

Thanks for this.

Since iPhones have become readily available in Hong Kong over the past 2 or 3 years I know that how to unlock them has been one of the major topics being discussed over the expat dinner party table.

This is a valuable contribution to these discussions for which we are thankful.

Since I asked the question 1041 days ago, my niece has come and gone back to America. I did find a great little shop (and even on HK side). Honest. Dependable. He unlocked it for under $150. He also unlocked my other friend's Blackberry for $80. He reformated another friend's Nokia (not smart phone) for$120. Another friend's phone which completely freezed and desperatately needed the info in her mailbox which she had not saved yet. She went to EVERY LITTLE shop in Causeway Bay that says they repair phones, everyone said once reformatted, cannot save the inbox messages. This guy did it at $180 !!!!!!!!

He's in North Point. In a neighbourhood where he HAS to deliver good work bc the residents around there all know each other. They are not tourists (gone tomorrow next seen again).
