TV Pearl; dumb question

This is probably a very stupid question...

I watch TV via a NOW Broadband account. But I keep hearing my friends mentioning local tv; specifically Pearl and another channel. They tell me I should be able to get these channels also.

How do these channels come in? Are they via cable, so I need a cable connection? Should I have some sort of satellite antenna that I have access through my apartment? Or are they just broadcast via the airwaves, and I should be able to access them without any special hookup.

Like I said, dumb question I know.

It's not a dumb question if you are new to Hong Kong. TVB (one mostly English channel, which is Pearl; one Chinese, which is Jade) and ATV (one mostly English, which is World, and one Chinese,

which is Home) are the local free-to-air broadcast channels. You can access them with rabbit ear antennas inside your flat, but most blocks of flats have a master antenna to which your management office can help you make a connection. They are free. You need no special connections of your own. Happy viewing ...

Thanks Goloh.

I've hooked up a cable from my TV to a port on the wall, but all I get is one channel that has an RTHK logo in the upper right, and another that has something like a Pepsi logo, with a circle that has a blue top, a green horizontal bar across the center, and a red bottom. But neither of these are in English....

Well, I found them :-)

Did a search on google and found the frequencies of Pearl and for ATV World, and adjusted my settings on a couple of unused channels. Thanks!

Good, well done, though just to clarify, TVB and ATV can be received without subscribing to cable service such as NOW. (Maybe that's what you said you did in the message just above.)

Ah Riverman..I am riding your stupid question boat. I just moved and previously I did not have to deal with the tv thing because when I got here it was all set up. I have since moved and now cannot get ATV Pearl so I can watch Survivor on Sat night. Have no idea where to get the cable to hook up the tv to the complex antenae or how to even switch the frequency to get this channel. AUGH!!!

Riverman might have turned in for the day but Goloh is still around. If you're in a complex with a management office, they might have a maintenance person on staff to help--you can't be the first with this problem. If you know anyone else in the complex, ask them how they did it. Failing that (and remember, "rabbit ear" antennas work OK temporarily, usually), ask around in your office and offer someone a glass of wine to come over and help? Last resort, look for a TV sales/repair place near where you live and see what they will charge to make a service call. Sometimes Fortress sales people can be persuaded to recommend someone. I've done all of the above at one time or another.

Hi gvong:

I have a cable that I picked up at one of those 'Japan Stores' in Stanley. It connects between the back of my TV and a wall plug that has two ports; one that says 'radio' one that says 'TV'.

another question (not sure if it's stupid or not), I have Now and it goes through my VCR to be displayed. TVB Pearl works fine when I have my VCR off but it doesn't work when my VCR is on. Anyone know why?

Thanks Riverman...I am going to have to go in search of the plug that will cooperate with the wall socket and the one behind my tv. Can't understand why they aren't all standard.....Lets hope it works afterwards.

It probably has to do with the settings on the TV. I have to select a different input for local TV, NOW Broadband, or my VCR. If my VCR is on, it overrides the local TV selection.

Possibly. Find the office remote, and change the settings so that the input is not NOW broadband. On my TV, I can select AV1, AV2 or TV. AV1 is NOW, AV2 is the VCR (I made an erroneous post previously about the VCR overriding local TV), and TV is local TV.

Without the extra cable connecting the back of my TV to the wall receptacle, the TV setting will only give me static.
