Hi honeybee,

Welcome to Philippines, I don't know pediatricians in Manila for I am located in Visayas. But, try to go to St. Luke's Medical Center - Quezon City. It's really nice hospital(expensive, but with high standard)

hope you'll enjoy staying here in Philippines!

My wife absolutely loved Dr. Theresa Henson. She delivered our twins two years ago. Her office is located in a building next to Rockwell Center, so if you're in Makati, it is quite convenient to get too, parking available etc. Don't have contact info, but can get it if you want it and can't find it (it'll be two days before I can reply though as I'm travelling tonight).

Hi ... I'm tmk's wife. Dr Henson is an OB/GYN and is excellent! I would strongly recommend the Pediatrician that she shares office space with at her Rockwell office. Her name is Dr Pia Lorenzo (her patients call her Dr Pia). She was educated in the USA. She's extremely thorough, gentle and kind. I miss her terribly!!! As for hospitals, Makati Med is old and not the most pleasant place but is excellent. Asian is newer and is excellent too but as I had a high-risk pregnancy, it was strongly recommended that I go to Makati Med as this is where most specialists practice from. I did see a specialist at St Luke's too but unless you live in Quezon City, it's a fair trip in very heavy traffic. I'm not sure if their new hospital in Fort Bonifacio is completed yet. This is, of course, assuming that you're living in Makati. I would strongly recommend that you join MADS (Mothers And Darlings Support Group). Excellent group! Our kids & I made loads of friends and they organize regular playgroups. Dr Lorenzo & Dr Henson can be reached at 898-0701. PM me if you want info about MADS and I'll put you in touch with someone directly. Hope you enjoy Manila. We sure did!

There is also another really good Pediatrician in Medical Plaza (behind Makati Med on Amorsolo). Dr Carolyn Butler. She's from the USA and was educated there. I saw her with my first child and the ONLY reason that I switched to Dr Pia is because of Dr Butler's location. She's located on an upper floor. The elevator ride is enough to put anyone off as it's so crowded. One of our twins was quite ill shortly after birth and I just couldn't see myself on that elevator with 2 newborns and an almost 2 year old. She was, however, excellent! Dumb reason to switch, I know, but my son was quite ill. (he's fine now) Sorry, I don't have her number handy but can find out if you're interested.

thank you for your replies. sorry i haven't been back till now. was having problems signing on so i graduated myself to 'mommybee' since i'm a new mommy :)

witty ham- i'm impressed with what i've heard and read about st. luke's but i wish it's in makati.

tmk & k8sMum- i was at the medical plaza earlier today and i understand totally about the lift ride. i'm not too comfortable either about being so high up in the building (23 floors up) in case there's an emergency or the lifts don't work. i think i will meet with dr. pia also.

i'm so happy that you mentioned MADS. i've been trying to find a contact. would appreciate very much if you could get me connected.

i'm also planning to start interviewing maid/nanny. which agency has good candidates and reliable reputation? a friend recommended st. martha's.

we also need a driver.. with a car would be best.. or a transportation solution.. we are reluctant to purchase a car. is it possible to book a cabbie as and when?

so much to find out..

thanks again

My best friend gave birth a month ago to a healthy baby boy. She saw Dr. Henson for her pregnancy and is now seeing Dr. Lorenzo for the bub. She can't say enough good words about both of them. Hope this helps. She delivered at Asian Hospital but Dr. Henson also delivers at Makati Medical Center.

Hi mommybee ... glad you got the MADS contact. Don't wait to join! Joining that group totally changed our posting to Manila. Great bunch of Moms! A great resource too.

Re: maid/nanny. I've never heard of St Martha's so I can't speak to that. The AWCP used to have a Maid/Yaya/Driver registry. Once a week (Tue?) at San Antonio Church (Dasmarinas/McKinley) you could go down and do on-the-spot interviews with household help. I know several people that got helpers that way. I don't know if it's still going on though. Personally, I always got my household help through recommendations. I do know of at least 2 yayas/all-arounds that will become available in the next couple of months if you're interested in interviewing them. They have been working for Canadians from the Embassy for several years and passed on as their employers moved on.

As for drivers, I think you'll have a tough time not having a vehicle in Manila. Not impossible though. I'm sure you've probably tried a local taxi by now and realize a regular cabbie isn't an option. There are drivers with cars and I did use one for the first 9 months that I was in Manila. It was a bit of a pain quite honestly as he had regular pick-ups daily and I had to work around his schedule ... not easy with a newborn. Another option is to call any of the big hotels. They all have a car/driver service. Pricier than taxis but the cost would probably be worth it if you don't buy a vehicle.

Hope that helps.

Best to get househelp through recommendations as you know they could be trusted already.

Drivers/Cars will be most convenient. Not always easy to get a cab especially during rush hour. Even those from the hotels are most often booked.

Hi,

I really appreciate all the advise. Thank you so much.

To start, I'm planning to join the AWCP and MADS. I'm so happy to hear that they're both great support groups.

K8sMum- I'm really interested to interview those candidates you mentioned. I would prefer recommendations too especially with experience with expat families. Could you let me know how I can contact them. That would be one big worry off my mind.

We started to consider purchasing a used car. Where did you find the drivers with cars? I noticed some listed in the papers. Those? I've asked from the hotel and it certainly is pricey.

drivers like maids usually are better coming recommended by other expat families. or hotels will be good as well since they have been previously screened/interviewed
