I have to buy a new washing machine and am only use to the 'front loading' type. Can someone give me their opnions on which type is best and why?
Also are machines ok to be put outside, as long as they have a waterproof socket.
Thanks and is quite urgent.

I personally like the front load machines better - esp if you are putting it outside. I put ours on the roof - and built a whole laundry room for the washer and dryer. However, if you dont have enough space - I would still suggest building a cupboard for the machine.

i prefer top loader.
i hate it when water collects in the seal of front loaders.
not sure about HK but in singapore, you can buy a "dress" for your washing machine if you place it outdoors.

Front loaders generally provide better performance. Believe they are also (slight?) more expensive.
Have had washing machines and dryers installed outside, but under cover (e.g., most condos/high-rises in Singapore have an open air area/pseudo balcony behind the kitchen).

Front loaders uses less water and are more energy efficient that a top loader.
However, you need to use a special laundry soap (HE - high efficiency) because the washing machine uses less water.
If you use a regular laundry detergent - your clothes will come out too sudsy. Also, the special soap is also more expensive than the regular detergent.
Also, with the front loaders you must leave the door open when the washer is not in use otherwise within a few months your clothes will stink and i mean stink of mold or dirty socks.
After EACH wash....yes... after EACH wash you need to wipe the plastic rim with a dry towel. If you don't do this, again mold will accumulate and the washer will smell.
The good thing about top loaders is that they can be opened in the middle of a wash cycle just in case you forgot to add something to the wash.
Whereas a front loader you can't do this because the water will come out.
Front loaders have become very popular in North America because it is more enviromental.
However, I can see the drawbacks with the humid climate in Hong Kong.
Many people who buy front loaders don't realize that they have to leave the door open and wipe the plastic rim after each wash. Some of the salespeople don't even know they have to do this.

Front loaders has the option of using hot water wash. I think the newer top loaders may have this option, as I remember seeing a Panasonic model having this.
With new technology, there are good top loaders which are demonstrating as good performance as the front loaders.
Eg. programs options, presoak, sensor for weight of wash loads to determine water level etc.
I have a top loader Panasonic in my backyard, positioned below the awning. On average, it takes about 50 mins for 1 full load of normal washing>rinsing>spinning.
Just make sure that the electronic parts/wiring does not get the direct sun's rays & rain which will possibly deteriorate the parts.
Also, you can add 4 extra blocks/bricks to elevate the washing mch, reducing possibility of getting wet at the bottom. I got these from IKEA.
