BNO - what does it mean?

when someone says he/she is a BNO, what does it mean?


BBC means British Born Chinese

ABC means American Born Chinese, Australian Born Chinese so I am thinking a BNO might mean British National Overseas?

It's a type of passport/travel document. BN(O)s were only issued in Hong Kong up to 1 July 1997. Now, it's is only renewable, although it can be renewed for life.


Many BN(O) passport holders will also have an HKSAR passport.

Britain issued this as a measure to prevent it from being overwhelmed by HK immigrants. In contrast, Portugal issued full citizenship to all their Macau citizens.
