Shipping a cat from Canada to Hong Kong

Has anyone ever shipped a pet from Canada to Hong Kong? I thinking about bringing my pet to Hk but the thoughts of putting my cat in cargo scares me. Do you know of any airlines that allow in-cabin flights for small pets? Has anyone ever done this before and how did your pet react?

Rather than thinking of how to get the cat here, perhaps you should be thinking about what kind of life your cat woud have in HK. If it's an outdoor cat, it may hate being cooped up in a flat. How will it handle the heat?

Years ago we moved a dog from Winnipeg to Victoria and he ended up with a horrid skin condition as he built up a winter coat and winter as he was used to it didn't come.

My cat is an indoor cat so I'm not worried about it running around loose in the streets. My biggest worry is how they handle animals on the planes and the fact that it is such a long flight :(

Thanks Cara. Is it very costly to use a pet travel agent? I don't mind paying as long as I know my cat will be safe.

We brought our cat with us from Germany to Hong Kong. We flew Lufthansa Air, who have an excellent reputation for pet transportation. We were very happy with their care and service. Animals in-cabin are not allowed on any flights to Hong Kong; they must go in the cargo hold. We worked with an agent, and they took care of the paperwork that we would need in Hong Kong and helped us through customs with her. I too was afraid of putting our cat in cargo and did alot of homework to avoid any mishaps. Here is a link to an article someone wrote about flying their dog; I followed every tip listed:

Our cat survived the flight very well, absolutely no problems. Feel free to PM if you have more questions.

Thank you KathJen. I looked at Lufthansa Air but it was about 5 times the price for a flight for myself. Maybe it would be better if I caught it as a transfer flight. I will definately look into the article. Your help is greatly appreciated :)

You should ask the pet transportation companies to advise you on any quarantine requirements / related fees once your cat arrives in Hong Kong

I hear that it is relatively easy to bring your cat to Canada, you just need the rabies vaccine. In Hong Kong there is genenerally no quarantine if the pet is from Canada but you have to apply 5 working days earlier (at the very least) for a permit. Has anyone ever had any layovers without direct flights when flying with pets?

Ten yrs ago we brought our tabby with us from Cda to Hk. had to get vet cert in Cda and also had to quarantine her for a little while. Can't recall how long tho.

Best to ask HK Gov about this stuff.

Can anyone explain how these pet agents work? i.e. I book my flight and then do they arrange the pets flight based on mine?

Also, can anyone recommend a good place to board pets in Hong Kong if I wanted to go on a holiday?

Thank you in advance.

I brought my 2 older cats from Vancouver 4 years ago and no problems. Then I sent them back to Canada 2 years ago, as I went back for a couple months. They then flew back to HK last year. I used Cathay Pacific and was really happy with them. I did all the work myself, less expense and actually quite easy.

I had them in seperate cages, with blankets and aqter and a little food.

From Canada to HK there is no quarantine and the only new thing I had to do last year is they now have to have a micro chip.

My cats are my babies, so I wanted them here with me.

The pilots are aware of LIVE animals in cargo and temperature is set appropriately. If you bring them in the winter, just make sure you have adequate blankets.

As for cat sitting, you may get to know people who don't mind to help you when you are away. Also there is wishyouwerehere petsitters, who come to your home every day. I almost used them, but a friend was able to help me out.

If you need any help, let me know

Also, on cathay pacific, it is a direct flight and was only 12 hrs. They flew on the same flight as I, the first time. When I arrived in HK, I went to cargo to pick them up. It is actually an easy procedure.

My cats were fine when they arrived. One was a little freaked out for a couple days, but they adjust fine.

Hi,

I brought my cat to HK two months ago and my husband's company actually covered a costly pet relo company. To put it simply, I did most of the work, paperwork, vet visits, etc, and it seems that the company just collected lots of cash. You can definitely do it yourself. My cat came on a totally different flight than mine. He actually traveled for close to 48hrs. He is still freaked out. I tried to take him on board with me, but pets are not allowed in cabin when arriving in HK, it doesn't matter what airline. If I were you, I'd search which airline is best with pet transport, just like jassy67 said above, Cathay is probably your best bet.

good luck!

As I recall, most airlines put a seasonal constraint upon pet transport--won't accept animals as cargo once air temperatures on either end of the flight reach a certain level. It's effectively summer here in HK and summer heat and humidity are brutal. Ask the airline about its temp limits.

Thank you everyone! I think once I've settled in my new apartment I will just adopt a cat from the SPCA and board it while I'm away. I will take it back to Canada when I actually move back.

Thanks so good of you!

Another organisation which is bursting at the seams with cats and kittens is Ding Dong Foundation. Athena Ho advertises the kittens here under Trading Post- Pets.

If you're looking at adopting a cat here- I can definitely vouch for the Ding Dong foundation- I went there in December, and found a pair of beautiful abbysinian cats that have wonderful personalities and are very well-behaved, despite having a very rough go for most of their lives

Where is the Ding Dong foundation?

The place is in North Point, near the MTR. If you look in the 'resources' section, then under 'Trading post' there is a section on pets. There are quite a few shelters that have cats, HKalleycats is another, even the SPCA.
