I'm pretty sure you'll get a few complaints, I certainly did. I know you can mute the drums themselves, but what about the cymbals?
For that reason, I ended up getting an electronic set. The new Roland sets actually have regular heads, so the feel is the same as a regular set. Even the cymbals aren't too bad. I would recommend checking out one of the music stores and trying out a set..

I bought also mutes for the cymbals... i am defintely sure i will have complaints.... but naah tried the electric drums before... didn't enjoy it whatsoever... well ok after the complaints... what will they do ... will they kick me out of the house you think?!! and also if i dont play at night .. you know... may be afternoons or weekends..

If you play in the afternoons, I don't think they can actually complain. Evenings and Sundays (they only time I was able to play) are a different story.
I just hope you're not living in my building :-)

Actually the law allows for complaints about noise from musical instruments AT ANY TIME! Your neighbours are gonna love you - not! lol

Ah, you've got to love this town! You can complain about musical instruments during the day, but not about the noise from the jackhammers being used to renovate the apartment upstairs....

I'd say go for it! I started playing again after 10 years without a set, and I'm loving it!

The Exapat - No. Not buying anything for him until he convinces me he's really into it. Get him using the sticks at home everyday which is a bit of a chore and I am happy for it to be like that until he decides he can do it for himself and more or he drops out....
I have a 6 year old who has wanted to start guitar lessons based on his older bro' playing an instrument and so he's started this week. They have to try these different things, give them opportunitie if you can afford it. You never know where they will find their forte.

BuRP, where is your son getting lessons? I have always wanted to learn the drums but like you, I don't want to spend money on a kit until I've had a few lessons and I'm sure I want to continue with it. Cheers

Well my case, i have always wanted a drum set. I reached a point where i was dreaming about having one lol.... every sound track i listen to, the drums only is in my ears... so i decided to get myself one.... and having the drumset itself gives you the motivation to go on and continue... but with kids it is a diffierent scenario of course... they might want it now.. then change their minds later... but RainHK... if you want one.. just go ahead and get one... like i did... i mean may be get a low budget one ... not necessarily the top brands... get used to it... then later on... upgrade...

I live in Sai Kung so might be a long way for you rainhk. They teach different intruments at this place. As you coming into Sai Kung it is on the right if you are come from Tseung Kwan O.
I have no idea how good the teachers are but hopefully its ok as a starter for my boys. They charge $140 per hour. They teach in a tiny room but I dont think you'd really notice it.
