A pediatrician told me that I can prepare baby’s milk and keep it in the fridge assuming that only cold water can be used. This to avoid reheating the formula more than once. I forgot to ask him and hence my question now: can I use distilled UNBOILED water to prepare formula? Or, do I need to boil it and cool first? Thanks.

No u can not use unboiled water to prepare formula eventhough it might be mineral or distilled water. It has to be boiled and cooled first.

Of course you can use unboiled water, if you know the water is clean. That's is the biggest issue is how clean is the water, ie. bottled water is fine, and how old your child is. If over 3 months then you don't have to be as precautious.
I use tap water that has been boiled and cooled and my kids are both fine.I prefer to do that than spend money on fancy water and then I know it's clean for drinking. what I do is make a big jug at a time and leave it on the bench and make the bottles from that water.

My confusion is after reading web sites that say it's OK to mix formula with distilled OR tap boiled cooled water. While I don't mind boiling and cooling tap water, I thought that may be our building is very old and tap water might be not good even after boiling. Here is another question: if I boil and cool distilled (drinking not the one for a car) water, is it better than the tap one?

My impression is that the distilled water is devoid of most of the minerals hence one should probably use the bottled mineral water but should check the brand for sodium content before doing so..

There has been a recent post on this do a search.
Distilled water is only ever good for car batteries as it has no or little minerals and zaps it out of YOUR body. When using Mineral Water for bub use Vilvic as low in sodium and recommended by doctors.

Distilled water is recommended by many paediatricians for the preparation of baby formula particularly in areas like yours where you are concerned about the water quality. The reason distilled water is recommeded by some over mineral water is because the baby formula contains all the minerals required by your baby.
A theory against the use of mineal waters inpreparing formula is that you may be giving extra minerals you may putt an added stress on his/her immature kidneys.
When I weaned my baby I looked at the available information on bottle feeding and found it was often conflicting. I decided to use distilled water and I boiled it until he was close to one.
I now give mineral water to drink as he is 15 months. He has been perfectly fine with this.
Good luck with your decision

Yes, distilled water from a sealed bottle can be used for mixing infant formula, however, some sources do recommend boiling all bottled water prior to mixing infant feeds.
The UK Department of Health (2006) revised guidelines suggest:
Feeds should be made up using boiled water that is greater than 70C: this means using boiled water that has been left to cool for no longer than half an hour.
Freshly made formula should always be used and left over discarded.
If a feed is required for later, just boiled water should be kept in a sealed flask to make up fresh formula when it is needed or liquid ready made formula should be used.
The temperature of the feed should always be tested prior to use. If too hot, cool under cold running water with cap covering the teat.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the information about boiling the water. My baby will be 10 months soon and we are planning to travel to Australia. What water should we use on the plane? With the restrictions on liquids, what can we do?
