I have been looking for some alternatives for my 4 year old other than the big international schools. Someone mentioned The Harbour School. Does anyone have kids who attend there now? What has your experience been with the school--ie. what are the positives and the negatives?

All the promo material and press sounds very good. But because it is so new I haven't seen any comments from actual parents, in fact I think it only officially opens in September (except for their Mandarin Summer Camp)?

The Harbour School is a new international school opening this fall. We are a community school; high involvement of parents, small class sizes and two teachers in every class. Because of the high teacher to student ratio, we are able to teach every child as an individual.
We are more than happy to give you a school tour and discuss our progressive educational philosophies at your convenience. Please contact info@theharbourschool.edu.hk for more information.

In each classroom there is one native English speaker and one Mandarin speaker. Classroom instruction is taught in English and Mandarin will be incorporated into the classroom, whenever possible. Language integration in the classroom will be supervised by the Mandarin Dept. Head who will also be conducting daily Mandarin classes.
I would be happy to answer any other questions you have. You can message me through the site or post if it is a general question.

Hi! I've looked through the info provided on your website, and maybe I'm going through it too quickly, but is The Harbour School a kindy, a primary school or a primary-middle or K-12? Is the curriculum British or American or Australian or Canadian (I'm guessing not American, judging from the spelling of 'harbour')? Since a google search turned up schools in the US and UK, is The Harbour School affiliated with schools overseas? Looking forward to hearing more -- it all sounds very intriguing.

After reading this posting, I contacted the school and received the following reply:
We are a new primary school and cater to students from the age of three to eleven (Reception to Primary 6). We are opening this August, and will be working towards accreditation with WASC and IB PYP. Before we are officially accredited, the curriculum is based on best practices of the PYP, national curriculums around the world, including the local curriculum. It is certainly a student centred inquiry-driven program. It is also very much a "community" school that places emphasis on commitment and involvement of all stakeholders (school staff, teachers, parents and of course the students).

My son currently attends the Harbour School and we're very happy with the education that he is receiving. There are 5 kids in his class with 2 highly qualified teachers. Try and find that student-teacher ratio anywhere else.
They are planning on eventually going up to a student-teacher ratio of 9:1. Compared with ESF (Bradbury) where the ratio can be 20+:1 (we know one child with a ratio of 25:1). This is still better than all other schools in Hong Kong. The kids really get a lot of attention from the teacher -- which was the whole idea behind The Harbour School.
It is a small school -- but you can see from your first visit that the staff genuinely care for the kids. My son has made huge leaps in reading & writing since he started there. Obviously they are doing something right.
The drive for a "small school feeling" is similar to that of Hong Kong Academy. The big advantage is that you still have a chance to get your kids into The Harbour School, whereas it's almost impossible to get into HK Academy.
