hmm, i find that for newborns, it's worth investing in an infant carseat for at least the 1st few months. it's the safest way to travel and easily portable, especially if they form a part of your pram.

so it really depends on how you feel about car seats, you have the following options:

1) rent a car seat? if there's such a service

2) buy a second hand maxi cosi or something?

3) if you haven't bought your pram already, a travel system or one of those quinny styles that you can fit an infant carseat?

why don't you use a any kind of carrying unit (Baby Bjorn etc.)? There are some where you can lie the baby in instead of having him/her seated. These things you can also use later for a long time.

Just make sure that you put the seat belt only around your waist and keep the shoulder belt behind your back.

YWCA might rent carseats - they rent other baby things.

Otherwise, ask one of your friends with a car and car seat to pick you up and drive you to the ferry... trust me, if they have the time they would love to help!!

A newborn is too small to use a baby bjorn, unless you are having an 8+ lbs baby! But if you ever do use one in a taxi, you put the seatbelt between yourself and the baby - so if there is a stop short, you will be restrained, but the baby won't get crushed. (same thing with a sling)

But reall, I agree with Wheelymate - a car seat is a good investment to keep your baby safe, and they are often for sale at reasonable prices on the clasifieds on this site.

to put it in perspective -

in the US, you are NOT ALLOWED to leave the hospital unless the baby is IN an infant car seat. I'd suggest borrowing one from a friend, or just buying a second hand one. It's not an investment you'll regret. We used it all the time after the baby was brought home - to the mall, in the taxis, as much as possible.

qwerty - I presume you live in DB? I would suggest you post a question on that forum site asking whether you could borrow one (if you haven't done so already) - unfortunately I don't have one as I borrowed a friend's for a couple of months - would have been a complete waste to buy one.

I've found that a travel system--infant carseat that pops into the pram has been really useful with my babies in HK even though we don't own a car. (We bought one because it's the law in the US to use a carseat). It gave me the freedom to go anywhere with my newborns---as I would never have to wake them up from their naps to get into taxis, ferries, airplanes etc. Also, if I was stuck in traffic and my baby was crying for milk, I could just hold a bottle to his mouth and feed him. With both of my kids, I actually used the infant seat until they were 12 months old as they were happy in it and didn't exceed the weight limit of 25 pounds!
