Hi. anyone has given their bub a BCG vaccine? My bub has taken one almost 4 weeks back but he has not develop any ulcer around the injection spot. though this is great, but i worry that whether the injection was done effectively and correctly as i've always known that there should be an ulcer. pls share whether your bub has developed ulcer (for BCG vaccine), when did it start (ie, since the injection) and how long did it last. pls share any reactions (eg, fever, etc) and what should i take care of. thx.

I remeber it appeared at my son at around 2 months old and it will look 'ugly' about 3 weeks. The nurse told me to do nothing as it will clear by itself and no fever or etc developed.

Our Son had almost no mark.

Our Daughter had the pus and mark.

Dr said both were fine. Same dr for both kids.

My daughter had BCG in Jordan at two weeks old and had no noticeable mark at all. I took her for another series of shots in the States and they do not even give a BCG. I have asked if a booster shot is needed and none is required. Has anyone heard of a BCG for adults? I am wondering if I and Husband should be vaccinated.

Catdawn - look at your arm and you probably have a scar of some sort - that is your BCG scar.

My son had his in his arm, but my daughter in her hip.

me too had the same concern when my now 3 months old baby didnt get any mark initially...its supposed to appear in a months time but nothing happened...but now that area is getting a bit hard and i can feel something coming up at that spot when i touch it...so i guess theres nothing to worry about the effectiveness of the injection

our son had the injection in his left arm and it took over a month to show up and over 3mths to heal completely. It starts off as a hard spot that once reaching the surface of the skin, becomes an open pus wound. Didn't seem to be painful or bother baby. At 6mths there is a red scar.

I don't have a scar at all. I think my husband has been vaccinated though. He has a scar. Does anyone know when they stopped giving BCG shots in the states? My daughter doesn't have a scar either. Oh,no something else to worry about. Guess I will call the doc and make sure.

You would know if your baby has had the bcg injection at birth because the hospital needs your consent to give the injection. Neither my husband or I have had the bcg vaccine as we both were born in Canada. I wouldn't worry too much :)

Both my kids have no scar and experienced no reaction (injection administered by 2 different doctors, both in the thigh, within two weeks of birth).

Catdawn, our baby didn't get a BCG b/c we'll be returning to the US in the near future (we're following a US vaccine schedule). In the States, a tuberculin skin test is used (I remember getting a skin prick test in elementary school). Well, we were advised not to get it b/c then your child will get a positive reading. A bit confusing...
