What's the procedure regarding obtaining identity documents for newborn (born in HK)?

Register their birth to obtain birth certificate.

When do I apply for his HKID card?

When do you apply for the passport? My husband has UK passport, I have Canadian and UK passport (british born).

thanks

You will need to pick up the birth certificate at the HK registry near Pacific place a couple of weeks after birth. No HK ID card until child is 11 years old.

For passport, you should get a soon as you have the birth certificate.

Yes, first get the birth cert from the births/deaths registry in Pacific Place.

If you're getting a UK passport, you can apply for this as soon as you like. Difficulty is getting the passport photo of a newborn (they are quite strict now about no parents hands in the photo, eyes open, etc.) I applied for both my kids UK passports as soon as I got the birth cert, when they were a few weeks old.

No HKID until child is 11 years old. If, however, the child is entitled to permanent ID through you and your husband's status, then once you get the passport you can go to immigration and get a sticker endorsement that says "Right to Permanent Identity Card established".

Hi Nina,

Our one-year-old has the same passports as you and this is what we did:

1) Register birth in Admiralty as described above;

2) Applied for a Canadian Citizenship Card (which can take up to 9 months). As Cara said, there is no need to apply for a passport unless you plan on travelling right away. However, we did just for peace of mind. Bubs is technically eligable for more than one passport and we thought it might stand him in better stead if he held physical passports in his hands if the rules change as they are prone to do these days;

3) Applied for UK passport which was very straightforward. We found the British Council very helpful and efficient;

4) Applied for HKSAR passport. To do this, bubs technically needs an HK identity card, so we applied for this at the same time. We found this REALLY useful for travelling since we didn't have to get his other passports endorsed with the right-of-abode stamp and he just enters HK with his HKID as a permanent resident as hubby and I do.

Hope this helps!

Like what mayafox says, YES, you CAN apply for HKID card for your baby, the one with no photo.

We made one for our son when he was 6 months old.

Once your child is 11 years old, you can change the ID to the one with photo on it.
