We are applying for our son's passport. He will be obtaining a British Passport and Canadian Citizenship/passport. We are considering also applying for a HKSAR passport but would like to know the advantages and disadvantages of holding a HKSAR passport.

From gov.hk:
You are eligible to apply for a HKSAR passport if you are:
* a Chinese citizen;
* a permanent resident of the HKSAR; and
* a holder of a valid Hong Kong permanent identity card.
BTW, the Chinese government does not (I believe) allow dual nationality so your son would have to give up his British and Canadian citizenship. Therefore think carefully whether you think it is worth it. I honestly don't understand why you are considering it in the first place.

I would do what many others have done and if he is eligible for HKSAR passport then apply for that first. Then apply for others. This is what we did for our daughter who holds an HKSAR passport and a British passport, Permanent ID and a China Back home pass.

evil> How did you get around the dual nationality fact, i.e. China doesn't recognise this?

I applied for her HKSAR passport first and PR card. Then China back home pass. Lastly the British passport, the UK recognises dual nationality so not a problem. So she has all of them. I know many others who have done the same thing as well as many HKSAR passport holders who hold other passports as well. The Chinese nationality part is the main criteria and as my daughter has Chinese nationality through her mother and also by being born here the rest doesn't really get noticed.

We are still wondering whether it's worth getting the HKSAR passport. Can anyone tell me what are the benefits/implications to holding a HKSAR passport? I mean maybe too many documents just complicates life (British/Canadian already). We feel that our priority is obtaining the British and Canadian.

evildeeds, can you tell me where/how you applied for the China back home pass. My son's adopted from HK, but when I asked about the home pass, they said he needed to have Chinese name on his ID to apply for it. Thanks.

Through the China Travel Service. My daughter also has a full Chinese name, although I did not realise that was an issue!
And to ninalee, is your son Chinese by birthright? If he is then you may be able to get a home return permit for your son although I can't see any advantage to an HKSAR passport. We only got one as part of the process of establishing her nationality in case there may be a problem.

Well I also went to CTS in Central and showed my son's ID but the lady said he needed to have Chinese surname. He is Chinese, born in Hong kong but of course he has a Western surname. Does your daughter have your wife's surname or did the documents you gave have your surname?
Sorry to hijack your thread ninalee.

My daughter has a western name and also a full Chinese name, her Chinese family name is a Chinese version of mine and this is what is on her birth certificate. So is official and legal.
And joshmomm, the original op stated her son would have both Canadian and British passport. British passport holders don't need a visa for Malaysia either! So still no advantages as of yet - although I'd like to hear of one!
