Anyone know of a reliable place to get a spare door key cut in/near to Central? The place I just tried made a copy that doesn't even fit in the lock let alone unlock the door!

not sure where you located in central but best will be going to the local neighbourhood , though they are small at times but pretty reliable, otherwise, they won't be able to stay around. sometimes the hardware shops, do this service too. my experience with them, simply cheap & cheerful. or else, try those shops in mtr station (they fix shoes & copy keys too).

True, but as I don't speak Cantonese (unless numbers and taxi directions can get me by money back) that's just not practical. For HK$7 a key I'll live with my losses and hope that the other people I'm doing this disfavour too will ready my thread and use the helpful advice from the other people who replied.

The shops in world wide house are reliable - I used the one by the exit leading to the walkway for the IFC building.
