harbin has the same kind of climate as mn. hot as hell in the summer and colder than an sob in the winter. from what i have seen on cct-9 travelogue; people in harbin enjoy ice fishin (but in a different manner). a group of people will gather around a lake and drag a net across (under the ice). they enjoy skiing, ice-skateing and other winter sports.

i am in shanghai and i would much rather be in harbin during the winter. it may be freezin cold there but at least its dry. its just cold and wet all winter long in shanghai.

I have never been to Yabuli but have looked into skiing in China. I understand that the infrastructure is very basic ie. rickety lifts, old rental equipment and little apres. Personally, I would be a little hesitant about taking a 6 year old unless they were already a capable skier. However if you are adventurous then would love to hear about your experiences. If you want some extra information check out the following links:

also take a look at this link as it summarises some other chinese ski resorts

It appears that there are many ski hills close to Beijing (which will be mobbed at weekends) so perhaps you could do both.

We have taken our (now seven year old) son skiing with us whenever we have skied. However we have always been to Whistler which is very kid friendly (great ski school and loads of kid orientated activities). This year we are going to try Niseko which comes well recommended and the advantage over Canada is no jet lag and (i'm hoping) cheaper. Hi I'm moving to HK in a month and looking for serious skiers to go on trips to Japan. I'm 29/male and pretty aggressive skier. Please drop me a line. You'll make my day!
