Are these available in Hong Kong or are they not permitted?

Many thanks for confirming my suspicions. I guess it would be easier to seek a second hand diesel engine van rather than try to convert a new vehicle. Presumably there are resrtrictions on LPG cars also, i.e. taxis only.

Why do you want a diesel vehicle Hecules? I mean I know the arguments for them but it seems getting one in HK is more trouble than it's worth.

A diesel engine is more efficient that its gasoline equivalent, and diesel is a fraction of the cost gasoline. I've owned and driven diesel cars in the past and have never had any trouble with them.

A diesel engine is less polluting than a two-stroke motorcycle engine, however, I agree that it's pprobably not worth pursuing further.

I all comes down to money. As Hong Kong relies on commerce goods need to be moved around by Goods Vehicles. the Govt. recognises this and therefore has reduced tax on diesel fuels. If Private Cars were allowed to be diesel it would be too complicated to differentiate between vehicles at the bowser and corruption would get into the fuelling system. Therefore it is much easier to prohibit P/cars from being deisels thus protecting the heavy tax on gasoline. I have a diesel pick-up truck registered as a light Goods Vehicle, it is 2500cc turbo, licenced for five including the driver. Annual tax is $2,200. Insurance is more or less the same as cars. It is easy to find parking spaces especially on street metered spaces as I can park in lorry spaces as well as the normal metered spaces. In may places lorry parking is free especially in shopping centres I park in the goods drop off/pick up areas, go shopping and when I come back I am loading my good (Park'n shop purchases). Only draw backs airport access sucks and annual inspection ($680). Diesel cost $9.31/l as opposed to gasoline which is about $14+ I also get discounts available at most fuelling statiions just ask for a membership card, different companies have different rates. I found Esso to be the best so far $1.50/l off diesel obtained through the dealers(Dah Cheong Hong) club membership(free). My truck averages $0.72/km. In the long run I am very happy to put up with the minor inconveniences.
