Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find Crisco or vegetable shortening to bake cookies with? I've tried looking at City Super in Causeway Bay and IFC, Great and Apita. Also, have asked the staff there and noone knows what I'm talking about when I ask for shortening.
Thanks!

Wellcome in Repulse Bay has it.
You could also try Gateway on the corner of Wing Lok Street and Des Voeux Road Central. They have all the US stuff.

Olivers sells Crisco and Great sells Atora vegetable "suet".

I've always found it in PNS. It's in the baking section with the cake mixes, flours etc.

Don't know what vegetable 'suet' is. Is that the same as shortening? Can I use it the same way I use Crisco? i.e. For each recipe that calls for x grams of butter, I just substitute Crisco on a 1 for 1 basis.
Thanks!

Vegetable suet would be equivalent to Crisco or shortening. I wonder though why you want to use Crisco instead of butter? Doesn't it end up tasting different? I always use Crisco for making pie crusts, because the recipe calls for shortening, but I would never put it in cookies because, well, butter does taste better! (And as far as i know, both are equally unhealthy).

For a really nice crust, I hear lard is actually great. As for the shortening thing, I would agree with hkkm that butter tastes better and works just as well.

I like using crisco instead of butter b/c it keeps the cookies soft and chewy. I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies just using butter and they weren't the same. And I guess I forgot to mention, I am actually looking for butter flavored crisco which gives me fantastic cookies!

The Park and Shp at Clearwater Bay (Siverstrand shops) has Crisco shortening in a couple of different forms (butter shortening anf regular shortening), along with suet.
Now if only we could find someone that retails Copha (coconut fat shortening).

Crisco has been out of stock everywhere for a while. I also like the butter flavored Crisco that comes in packs instead of the original in the tub, but use it mostly for crusts and breads. PNS, called Taste sometimes, carries both varieties when in stock. Suggest you stock up when the shipment gets in. I will!
