I'm looking to buy some Chinese antiques but I'm scared to death of buying fakes or getting ripped off on the price. Does anyone have good advice for a first time buyer?

Looking at ads in the dollarsaver doesn't exactly guarantee you won't get ripped off.

If you are looking for advice on a forum like this, with all due respect to all concerned, you are a good chance to get conned.
Do some serious research, visit some museums, talk to lots of dealers - in other words develop some sort of genuine expertise. Otherwise you are just a lamb to thd slaughter.

Woods 99 - I'm aware that going into this without any expertise is a bad idea. I picked up a book recently and I'm starting to do some research. Can you recommend any dealers in the city I can speak with?

We've had good experiences at the Chine Gallery--talk to the owners if you can. Also, the people at Honeychurch Antiques are quite knowledgeable and honest.
Both are on Hollywood Road.

I know I keep mentioning Horizon Plaza but there are quite a few stores there with Chinese antique furniture. I'm no expert but they all seem quite reputable.
BTW you could resell the stuff in the US for three times the price. ;)

Deirdre from the Australian Association was organising two day trips into China to a 'Clan' house which is used as a warehouse. She takes an Expert in Chinese Antiques with her to advise the members of the group on their selection of pieces. The pieces are very much in the 'raw' and once you choose what you want you organise for it to be restored / cleaned up and then it is shipped to you in Hong Kong or sent directly to your home country. The prices are a fraction of the price you will pay in Hong Kong.
I went on a couple of these trips a year or two back and would highly recommend it. Everything is orgnanised for you, the ferry ride up the Pearl River Delta, the hotel, small bus in China to take you to and from the Clan house, meals etc. You only need to organise your China visa yourself.
Contact the Australian Association - details will be on their website. It is really worth it and a bonus is that you get to see another part of China as well as making new friends on the trip.
