haircut for long, fine, straight hair

My daughter has long, fine, straight western hair and would like a nice cut (keeping the length). Any advice on where to go on HK side? Would probably prefer a westerner because of his/her experience with this type of hair. And someone who wouldn't take a razor to it. Thanks.

Would suggest that you do a search on the "Women Only" forum. There are dozens of recommendations for western hair stylists.

I've lived in HK for 5 years and have just now found a hairdresser that does a great job with my really straight, shoulder length hair. Five weeks later, it still sits nice even though it has grown out a bit. His name is Rudy (he's french) and he is at O2 hair salon on Wyndham St in Central. No razor in sight and he didn't cut many layers, but my hair still swings nicely. It was a pretty expensive haircut, but as I only get my hair cut about 3 times a year, it was worth it. Otherwise, suggest as above for cheaper options.

If she's under 5 there's "Magic Mirror" in Caroline Centre. They're quite good with the young'uns. Our daughter has straight fine hair and we're satisfied.

Actually asian hair is generally more coarse and caucasion hair is generally finer and we also tend to have more strands than caucasions. Because each strand is thicker and more elastic there is less breakage. Combine this with the fact that asian hair is most often straight we tend to get razor cuts to break up the uniformity and stop the cut looking blunt where as for all the opposite reasons this is may not be so sucessful on caucasion hair. This concludes todays lesson on asian hair :)

Not to stereotype. by any means... Westerners with fine hair "usually" want their hair to look fuller, whereas the opposite seems to be true with HK chinese. Most of the long hair styles I see here are "sleek". When I went to a chinese hairdresser near my flat, he went at my hair with a razorblade, starting the "layers" way above my ears. When I asked what he was doing, he said he was thinning out my hair because it was too full and, to add insult to injury, he said that my thick hair made my face look fat! A razor blade thins out the hair too much for my personal/ western taste. Hope that explains!

"sn't long fine straight hair what 99% of HK Chinese people have? I would have thought that having wavy thick hair would be more of a problem in HK.."

Agreed with mayo. "Asians" as a rule have thick hair, while ethnicities like Slavic and Scandinavian generally have very fine hair. Both are straight.

Very bad for thin hair as you probably noticed.

I ended up going to Emmanuel F. Evolution at 10 Pottinger Street -- Gilbert cut my daughter's wispy fine Scandinavian hair beautifully, and the salon charges only 250HK$ for kids (anyone under 18!)
