I am fairly sure that to get a permit for using the tung chung road to get to cheung sha,mui wo etc you have to live on that side of the island. Also even with permit you can only use the road at night. I think can only use between 6pm and 8am.

try the transport department, they probably handle applications and be able to give guidance.

Yes, the permit is only available to residents and there is a waiting list. As mentioned above there is information available on the transport department website

maybe a better idea would be to do some of the walks on lantau to really get away from the noisy city??? if that not possible then there are lots of pinic sites with great views, that you can get to by bus or taxi.

Maybe, we rented a house on Lantau for a weekend the first year we were here, and it came with a car that we could use.

Transport Department as mentioned earlier, and there is a waiting list also mentioned earlier, so renting a place will not guarantee you receiving a permit.

The latest I heard is that the new road will be unrestricted for permit holders i.e we can drive during the day! But I believe they are not allowing non permit holders use of the road. We had no troubles getting a permit once we moved here but we needed a utilities bill with our name and address to prove we lived here (or you can provide a Copy of tenancy agreement and rental receipt issued for the applicant’s residence or land search document issued by Land Registry to certify the applicant is still the owner of residential property) End of June for new road opening?

Wow, I didn't realise the driving was restricted to night time and that there was a waiting list.
We're looking at a few places to live and were considering Pui O and Chung Sha and thought it would be no trouble to just buy a car, get a permit and whammo, we're mobile....well I guess Pui O is less of an option now!

The only restricted road at the moment is the road to Tung Chung - if i need to go there I hop on a bus or a taxi - easy! Otherwise driving around here is a breeze (day/night!)- don't let that put you off - you'll love it out here! As I mentioned before, we had no problems getting a permit (4 mths ago)-as long as you have ALL of the documentation required, the whole process from the application to the permit took 3 weeks - we were able to organise it so it was ready for when we moved out here :)
