must get the smell of moth balls out of the closets in my new apartment!
I've been looking everywhere (park and shop, wellcome, city super) for baking soda and can't find any -- anyone know where I can find some?
or better yet, anyone know how to get rid of that moth ball odor? I'm trying coffee grinds and activated carbon, with limited success.

I got my baking soda at parknshop, since it's not used by many I assume it's not on the upper shelves. But if you go to the westerners' supermarkets like 'great' or 'city super' since most employees there speak good english I am certain they will help you get one.
About the smell, have you tried those bags of rosmary? I think the strong smell will get the moth ball smell away.

Baking soda is the same as Bicarbonate of soda isn't it.
I kniow that Bicarbonate of soda will remove smells. It's easily available. I know I've seen it at Park n Shop in Happy Valley

Put a small amount of white vinegar in a container next the bicarb. The two together work a treat. I do this for fridge odours.
Yes, Sarsky, bicarb is the same as baking soda.

Geez, I never knew baking soda can do that. Good to know.
I always used it only to make pancakes, LOL.

cedar wood chips absorb smells too, don't they?baking soda is the best though. sprinkle it around and leave it then vacuum or open a box and leave it in the closet and fridge. Why do people use mothballs? Are there really moths around? Idon't like the smell. Don't people know they stink of mothballs when they use them??

As far as I know, moth balls- the original old ones are banned in quite a few countries because they found it to be bad for you. They use something else which doesn't have this horiffic "never ending" "never goes away" smell.

thanks for the replies.
for anyone else who's battling mothball stench in furniture, my web research suggests the best options are:
1) putting the furniture outside, under the sun, and airing it out for as long as possible
2) absorbing the smell with baking soda/activated carbon/crushed newspapers/cat litter/coffee grinds
3) sanding the surface of the furniture and painting it over
