What is the situation regarding broadband internet in Hong Kong?
1. Do they have bandwidth limitations?
For instance here in South Africa, we pay for every mb of data uploaded and downloaded.
2. What is the cost for basic dsl, or fixed line internet?
3. What are the options and cost of wireless internet?
Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

No they do not have bandwith limitations, like the one you mentioned, that is a pretty harsh regime usually you get some amount of Data transfer free, and then a charge in the UK its like 40-60 gigs free a month, but they havent introduced it in Hong Kong yet, there is apparantly limitation of speed for bandwith hogs, but I have never experienced it. so I dont know how true that is. You get 1.5M,3,6 or 8M plans
You get wireless or you can buy a router really cheap

Thanks, Digital Blonde.
Yes, here in South Africa internet connectivity is pretty limited. I have a very cost effective dsl plan. I pay HK$245/month and then HK$70/gb of data bandwidth.
It is a very effective way of combatting software and art piracy. Downloading a movie would cost more than buying the original at the shop. :)

yeah but it seriously limits what you can do on the internet, I had to use one of those plans when I lived overseas, and its really not very good, once you get unlimited downloads at good speeds, your life will change

Yep, it seriously does limit one. Can you imagine the effects on education, and that in a developing country that really needs to educate its people. Of course, our government controlled telecommunications company owns around 90% of all internet infrastructure. No African government has ever really worried much about education, or the welfare of its people.
Anyway, don't let me get carried away here...

Another internet service provider that is even better than netvigator is i-cable - not only cheaper but better and quicker service and fewer pre-set limitations when your surf.

1. Nope
2. About 200-300 Honkies/month.
3. You can buy a wireless router. In many cases the ISP will provide one. Otherwise there are wireless plans. Check pccw.com.hk for example.

What preset limtations does Netvigator have?

Meh. I'll chime in and say that those plans are really annoying. What you're saying sounds like propaganda from the government. Piracy can't be solved like that, as evidenced by its continued existence.

I'll tell you what it is, I lived in a developing country for while which wants to be a permanent member the security council and claims to be an IT powerhouse, the ISP's were providing allegedly 256K speeds, you rarely got speeds above 64K and most times not much better than dial up, and they imposed 1 gig a month download limit after which there was a per megabyte charge. If you ask me they do it becuase there is poor internet penetration and lack of competition which they seem to think justifies, these kind of pay as you go prices, I am not sure why.
They have download limits in the UK but you get a pretty large free allowance, though you can get unlimited packages as well apparently those who hog bandwidth though have their speeds limited at peak time. We are very fortunate there is none of that in Hong Kong, though customer service is pretty bad.

I was joking about it being an anti-piracy tool. It is simply that SAIX (SA Internet Exchange) is run by the state. The top management are obiously very well paid friends of the government.

Hehe. I bet I know who has unlimited bandwidth then. ;)
"I have wireless internet from Vodaphone. HK$ 360- per month, no limitations."
At what up/down speed?
