Gym and personal training advice

ORIGINAL POST

I get asked a lot from expats recently moved here to HK about gyms and personal training. I have been using gyms for many years and have been to most. I was a member at The Gym, Tom Turks, Physical, California, New York Fitness, Pure, Fitness First. I gave them some useful advice so they could make an informed decision without seeking it from those "sales" ppl. I am offering advice to anyone who needs it on this thread and inviting others to add their 2 pennies worth. Also have used some personal trainers in my time. They are very useful so long as you choose one that actually knows what they are doing. Some friends of mine have gotten injuries from training with their trainers also. Feel free to ask.

Good Idea, you should perhaps get Ed to put the column on the main page when the new design kicks in. But great idea.

Do you have any feedback on Pure Yoga ? They recently opened in Taikoo Place and I am thinking of gifting a membership to my wife.

I paid almost $ 1000 per month for my membership and . the gym has a new rule . which is not allowed to workout for more that 30 mins on the Cardio machines . I thought I can use as long as I can .

That is an outrage, The gym needs to buy more machines or not add any new members if they are rationing time on machines. I would get a refund for any joining fees because there has been a material change in their rules which would have affected your decision to join and then and move to a place which doesn't have such rules. Fancy charging you a monthly fee so you can use their machines, and then being told you can only use it for a limited time period only and $1000 per month is sheer extortion you can get a membership with no limits at Fitness First or California for less then half that a month . I run 10k a day, and that takes me anywhere between half an hour to an hour depending on how hard I am training. If someone came up to me mid way through and said I had been on the machine too long, I would give them the middle finger, tell them to stick it and say make me get off the machine. The only reason I pay them any money in the first place is so I can use that machine in particular, the running machine, I can live without every other one. I would never agree to join a gym that had time limits on cardio machine use.

that's true ,but the gym in SOHO is pretty small . so they limit the workout time to 30 mins , which I think is crazy , I join all clubs , 2 branches so I dont think i have a good reason to get a refund ,. and often 3-5 people q up during the peak hour ,, when i first join they said they have a hyproxide room . and now they turn into a vibrating machine area . ,,

just like Now TV .. they said they have the right to make any changes , for example . if I buy a Sports package . they have ESPN + Sports + golf + tennis. they make u sign up the package and then they can cut out any channels they want . is there anything we can do ?get a refund , is very hard in Hong Kong

No they say in their term sheet they have the right to make changes but that is going to have to be within reason. If it is materially adverse to the terms you signed up on, then you can kick up a real stink and if they still disagree and will not refund your money, then you can take them to court. It is easier to get a refund or some kind of compensation out of a gym then PCCW for example but it can be done I have done it, I cant go into specifics because it contravene posting rules and the company is an advertiser on here and it would not take a lot to figure out whom If I were to relate the story.

Contracts like the one they make you sign when you join a gym or PCCW for example are designed to protect vendor and offer the customer no protection. If you go all the way with your claim and it is clear that the changes they have instituted are materially adverse to the ones you signed up on, Then I doubt any judge will be sympathetic to the vendor. Offering a particular service so that you can sign up subscribers and then withdrawing the service or limiting its use after you have signed up those subscribers is tantamount to fraud, The fact that you have signed a standardised contract which grants them that privilege gives them some protection, but it is not all encompassing should you choose to go ahead and fight it.

I just notice they stop placing the copies for the class schedule by the reception , I guess they are cutting cost . when u are paying almost $ 1000 per month for membership fee .I m also disappointed that I needed to pay extra ( $ 350 ) for a class with a visiting instructor . shouldn't the gym cover these cost through the membership fee ?

yes i know maybe the reason is e co friendly

.Which i suggested them to use paper cup instead of the plastic cups in the changing room for the water .which i think is really bad member have some a bit of water and throw away the plastic cups .

And they used to print out the class schedule ( each branch on different paper ) and the back they print out the descriptions . WHICH I think they can print 2 different club Schedule on both sides on the same sheet of paper .

that would save them half of the papers!

I also talked to a member the gym saying they never response to my comment . they said the used to reply . but the just stop doin it .

since i suggest they should use the paper cups instead of the plastic cups twice in 2 yrs ago . and they decide not to give me an explanation why they keep using the plastic cup .

I think the gym is pretty good 2-3 yrs ago . but they don't seem to maintain the "premier health & fitness facility "

and the trash bin was broken for ages in the lasdies changing room and they just ignore it .shower are getting really worst . and gross . they have some little flies .

I m very disappointed they don't maintain it while the fancy advertising every where, $ almost 1000 membership fee and limit myself working out on the cardio machine for 30 mins .I dont; think I can get a refund for that ?

spoke to the staff they said " hope u understand it ,is getting more members and the gym is very small .so that we limit member the time 30 mins only on the cardio machine .

Changing the subject just slightly.... Has anyone any recommendations for places to do Yoga on a fairly casual basis or a really good monthly deal? Central to Western District would be great.

Thanks

DB> Half an hour for 10km is quite impressive, given that the world record is 26:17.53.

yes I know I am mindful of that one, 32 minutes is my fastest actually, and I don't run it that fast every time, somewhere between that time and sometimes even up to an hour depending on how my body is feeling. It really varies a lot sometimes it just wont let my mind push it, no matter how much it wants to. Pro distance runners are a lot more consistent then I am.

Does anyone know if there is a decent gym around Happy Valley? I had the luxury of having a gym at our condo in SG, but woah, are things different here. I will start work in Wanchai in October, and have noticed the California Fitness there, but I would prefer to workout on my own timing nearer to home. Any good advice is welcomed.
